Subverting the subversive: that is the idea behind this high-end fan zine with numerous contributors, gold printing, and sophisticated production techniques. Presenting a zine as a luxury object makes an interesting commentary on the Portuguese economy and the increasing demand for designers to do more with less.

Project Description

"Nem tudo que reluz é Ouro" (All that glitters is not gold) is a publication that was born from the love of illustration, self-publishing and collaborative work.

At a time when we are required to develop an increasingly austere creative process, "Nem tudo que reluz é Ouro" intends to subvert the fanzine format, disguising itself as a luxury object: the amount of guest authors, the printing technique and the graphic elements try to emphasize this concept.

Production Lesson(s)

This printing process was very challenging because, on one hand, the print run was huge. On the other hand, because we wanted to have a really shining gold. To achieve this, we used a vinyl ink as opposed to a regular one. Due to the amount of printings, the board was always getting dry, so the process took even more time.

In the beginning of the process, we wanted to have the onion paper between the two pages, because we thought it could give the idea of something almost untouchable. Then, we thought it could be something that would disturb the readers' eyes, so we took it out. In the end, we decided to give it back to the book, not only because the first idea still made sense to us, but also because it prevented the 'profile page' from getting dirty from the illustration.”
