This series of designer “collector coins”—or graphic design Poggs—highlights an assemblage of panelists featured at an AIGA Chicago event titled, Loose Change. Each coin is printed on a different color stock and presents a portrait of the designer on one side with a biography written by one of the other panelists on the flip side.

Project Description

Neenah and Unisource sought to co-create an AIGA Chicago event that would unpack and celebrate changes in the design industry, and how they affect the Chicago design community. The result was a lively panel discussion, entitled Loose Change, with a panel of diverse Chicago designers in different career stages, firms, and foci: Bart Crosby, Steve Liska, Rick Valicenti, Alisa Wolfson, Dawn Hancock, and Katherine Walker.

Our team created a set of "collector coins" that highlighted both the impressive roster of panelists, as well as the beautiful papers of Neenah. Each coin featured a unique portrait of the designer and biography written by one of the other panelists, housed in a custom, orange wallet.

Production Lesson(s)

We found that registration (in the form of a great press operator) is crucial when you're trying to under-print white beneath hundreds of tiny circular dots. GAS's people did a very good job. We also found that while creating faux bitmap portraits is a great solution to questionable quality headshots of people, it is still time-consuming. Using a tablet in illustrator to do lots of individual dot selection will prevent cramped hands. While it's an amazing luxury to print on 8 different stocks, it is not easy to find techniques and print styles that unify such a diverse set of papers. Some things have to be sacrificed—we tried using a clear ink for titles on one side, but couldn't get it to work across all colored stocks, and had to drop the process. But the final result is stronger without it.”
