This is a book about Matthew Manos’ “double-half” methodology, which allows service providers to philanthropically give half of their work away for free. One of the most important aspects of the project was budgeting the balance between amazing design and being able to print as many books as possible. The paperback was printed in black-and-white for economical reasons, but the pages still feature super-cool ideas, infographics and charts.

Project Description

How to Give Half of Your Work Away for Free is a book that aims to open-source the 50% pro-bono business model invented by Matthew Manos known as the “double-half” methodology. The toolkit is broken into four primary sections that each aim to represent the inner-working of the model from drastically different perspectives. The origins of this business model reside in verynice, a global design and innovation consultancy that gives over half of its work away for free, but components of the methodology have now been leveraged by hundreds of service-providers across the globe who, together, are re-defining “philanthropy.”

Going off creative director Matthew Manos’ brief of “flowcharts on crack,” art director and designer Kate Slovin approached the design of the book in terms of its eventual mediums: paperback book printed in black and white, and e-Book. Working in a pre-determined space allowed the tools provided by the program to dictate the visual impact the book would have on its readers. The book is filled with whimsical charts and artwork submitted by verynice’s global volunteers. The simple visualization of the complex written content became the visual identity and structural back bone of the design.

Production Lesson(s)

With such a limited budget, we learned how to work within a restricted space; there was quite a delicate balance between making the book look amazing, and being able to print as many as possible to donate and give away!”
