Turning spam into a more palatable dish, this watermelon-flavored zine will have you peeking through the glory hole again and again. We all can appreciate unintentional junk mail poetics, but it takes a hero to wrap it up right.

Project Description

For over 2 years, I checked my Spam folder for emails selling me erectile-dysfunction drugs, from lonely girls who want to chat, and pitching me secrets on how to hook-up with any woman I meet. More often than not, the titles of these emails were absurd, downright confusing, laughable or cringe-inducing.

Recently I found the time to focus on what I wanted to do with them, finally settling on a zine. The first issue, “Mine is Bigger,” is garishly printed across 20 pages of Brite Hue Ultra Fuchsia 65 lb. and Ultra Lime 24 lb. papers as an homage to the pornography industry’s lurid home video package designs. The cover and its circular die-cut is modeled after voyeuristic peepshows as well the world’s more vulgar tool; the glory hole. To preserve privacy, each copy of the zine is conveniently shipped in an unmarked black envelope to safeguard from prudish neighbors and nosy postal workers. For those less discreet, three designs from the zine are also available as t-shirts, hoodies, prints, and more at Man Alive Creative’s Society 6 online shop.

I chose to utilize the very contrasting, elegant styling of the Paperback typeface from my friend's at House Industries. I suppose the mismatch made me quite happy, really. Printing was done on an inkjet while I scored the signatures, die-cut the cover, staple-bound, and hand-numbered each copy in one long, tedious yet relatively smooth day.

Production Lesson(s)

As we know, having the right tools for any job– let alone this one, makes all the difference. With a quality long-reach stapler for the saddle-stitch binding, a well-built rotary circle cutter, and an efficient inkjet printer, I was able to produce this zine to be exactly what I had envisioned in my head all along. The research I put in when seeking out these tools, as well as the paper itself, went a long way to making this a smooth production run.”
