This book documents Peace is a Haiku Song, a participatory public art project in Philadelphia designed to engage the global community in “an exploration of the haiku as a vehicle for peace and urban transformation.” A Tokyo-inspired belly band covers up part of the book title, subtly representing the curiosity and delight provoked by the project itself.

Project Description

We worked with Yolanda Wisher at the Mural Arts program and Sonia Sanchez, Philadelphia's Poet Laureate, to create this book that documents the Peace is a Haiku Song project. It features over 40 full color images and 300 haiku from around the world. The text is printed on 70lb. French Duratone Newsprint Extra White paper and the book's cover has a full color belly band displaying details of a mural that was created for the project.

Production Lesson(s)

We really enjoyed working directly with poet laureate Sonia Sanchez to produce a beautiful book documenting her work. When we were working on the book we were in Japan and were inspired by the print culture there. We wanted to create something that reflected the Japanese attention to detail, while at the same time telling the story of the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and the work of Sonia Sanchez. We decided to use a belly band that we saw on a lot of books in Tokyo. We printed a photograph of a mural that Sonia had collaborated with on the belly band. The band partially hid the title of the book that was printed on a sparse white background of the actual cover of the book. We worked with the printer to make sure this would precisely line up, lending a bit of surprise and drama to the first time that you open the book up. ”
