This is what a scrapbook of your life looks like when you have a designer as a child. Hardbound and hand-swen, Louis Boys’ tribute to his father’s 60 years of life could probably withstand hell and highwater.

Project Description

144 page leather-bound book commemorating 60 years of the life of my father, Alan Boys. The aim of the project was to capture his essence: an object that would feel timeless yet personal when passed on through generations. Filled with anecdotes, photographs, and memorabilia from his life, the book is split into three distinct chapters; the early, middle, and later years.

A reductive approach to the design was adopted to maintain focus on the stories and rich imagery. Doctrine and Mercury were the typefaces chosen for their temperate yet personable feel, whilst a refined grid and colour palette reflected the personality of my father.

Production Lesson(s)

With a catalogue of my father's entire life worth of photos, memorabilia and stories to collate and curate, the inherent difficulty came down to deciding what was superfluous, both in content and design.

When it came around to production, my choice of paper weight (against the binders advice) proved to be slightly thicker than I expected when bound. The foil block I had made for the cover also didn't account for the space taken by the spine fold, so it was nearly nudging the edge, rather than centered as I had planned. The book however was designed and completed in a paltry six weeks, so I think these hiccups were permissible!”
