Project Description

For their 2013 client holiday gift, Goods & Services and Flash Reproductions decided to make the season a little sweeter by treating recipients to a flight of three different grades of maple syrup.

Following their mandate of giving handcrafted products from local producers, Goods & Services sourced the syrup from Matthews Maple Syrup, a family-owned farm in Powassan, Ontario. Ranging from light to medium to amber, each of the syrups was custom bottled and labelled with names that reflect an aspect of Canadiana: light like the song of a voyageur (light), smooth like the shot of a hockey player (medium), and strong like the arms of a lumberjack (amber).

Continuing the theme of Canadiana, all three syrups are nestled inside a bright red, specially designed box, with a subtle pattern of iconic images from a Canadian winter, as well as an homage to maple syrup, written in the style of Canada's national anthem.

Thanks to precision measurement and cutting techniques, each bottle sits snugly inside its own slot in the custom-made box, held in place by the box's label.

Production Lesson(s)

There were quite a few challenges on this job. Our first challenge was to find a syrup producer who could prepare the quantities we needed on relatively short notice and then we had to source and make decisions on the bottle itself (dimension/size/etc.).

Once all that was sorted out, we then moved on to the cardboard package. Our original intent was to laser cut the layers of cardboard and glue them to make the boxes, but laser die cutting proved too slow of a process. After a number of substrate options were tested, we settled on die cutting layers of cardboard and sandwiching them together, something both us and Flash had never done before.

The whole project was an exercise in trial and error, but the great response received from clients, family, and friends was well worth the trouble.”
