Project Description

Almanac recently completed a branding project for photographer Jay Fram. When it came to the business cards, we wanted to bring back thermography after the terrible beating it was given from Armin. Business cards are printed on one side with black thermography, with the reverse side covered in a mix of 36 different images across three different colors/shades of Classic Crest paper.

Production Lesson(s)

First, we learned that Armin thinks thermography looks like 'squirrel droppings'. Second, we learned that almost nobody does thermography. Our Advertiser's printing rep Liz Lewis searched and found one place–which turned out to be the oldest running printing company in St. Louis–who still did.

Originally we tried to print the images on an HP Indigo but the thermography process was causing large scratches in the digital ink and we moved to offset.

Here's a write-up on our blog about the project, along with a video of the crazy old thermography machine.”
