The craftsmanship with which this poster is composed leads me to believe that the designers at Not Swords held off celebrations until after printing was complete.

Project Description

Every year, Summit Brewing Co. celebrates the repeal of prohibition with a new, annual poster design and by throwing a Repeal Day event at their Saint Paul brewery/taproom.

We combined a variety of techniques to produce a poster with early 20th century charm and a contemporary composition. The piece is a distilled timeline of the number of active breweries in the United States at different stages in recorded history.

The vehicles were chunks of hardwood cut into puzzles. The pieces you see were left "type high" while the remainder of the block was either cut down or engraved away. The type was printed using lead versions of the typeface Craw Modern, except "Prohibition", which is set in Bodoni Ultra. Summit's 2 versions of their logo were produced using photo-polymer plates.

Production Lesson(s)

Using end grain lumber puzzle prints creates a unique printed tone on every print. Puzzle prints shift slightly not matter how tight you lock-them up. Polymer plates should avoid placement near the very top and bottom of the print when using Vandercook Proving Presses. ”
