Looking more heirloom than GMO, this seasonal farmers market journal keeps production costs low by wrapping a digitally printed interior with a letterpressed cover. (Great lessons learned too, on the sidebar of this post).

Project Description

We were commissioned to design and write copy for bespoke recipe journals which was a perfect opportunity to employ the brand's down-to-earth and effortlessly witty sense of humor. The journals are singer stitched and use colored endsheets to impart useful and humorous information. The cover was letterpressed and the endsheets and interior pages were digitally printed using a Xerox Nuvera press which can print with extremely high resolution (lines down to 70 microns) and precise alignment, making it ideal for affordable pages.

Production Lesson(s)

We learned: 1. That a simple notebook in reality is actually incredibly complex and we spent about double the time on production oversight than we did the actual design. 2. Singer stitch is really difficult to keep perfectly straight and consistent (we knew this due to tests we had received prior to running the whole job) which the client accepted and even embraced. 3. Binding too many pages can create a really springy notebook–we lowered the amount of interior pages to avoid this. 4. Xerox Nuvera are really great digital presses and can get crazy fine detail, better than the big digital presses like the HP Indigos, etc. 5. Small notebooks/journals are incredibly cheap (under $1.50) if you stick to digital printing and have them saddle-stiched.”
