Project Description

Every university has one: an undergraduate viewbook that paints a rosy picture of student life. But Duke's new recruiting piece, designed by 160over90, is an unexpected mix of traditional and modern where typefaces collide, chapter book segmentation meets comic book style, and the University cuts through the clutter to talk college truths.

"Know no bounds" inscribed on the cover, sets the tone for the book and for the Duke college experience. This concept is stylistically juxtaposed with bold border treatments on each page.

Multidirectional gatefolds throughout the book are suggestive of  the many paths students can take at Duke. Varying typefaces and a mix of serif and sans serif fonts are representative of longstanding traditions infused with forward thinking. Graphics, infographics, and sidebars lend a modern look amid super-classic campus imagery.

Production Lesson(s)

Planning a book with six gatefolds meant we had 36 gatefold pages and 48 text pages, which came out to be one gatefold after every 8 pages of text. This resulted in multiple cross overs on every press form while we were printing. Making sure the color on one half of a spread matched the other half that had been printed the day before was tricky, but the design was worth it. The final viewbook came out exactly as we had wanted. I'm very proud to have worked on and helped produce such a intricate, well-designed piece.”
