Project Description

A labelling system for a hand dyeing company selling high end yarns for knitters, we wanted the labels to reflect the tactility of the yarn and include a process like theirs, with an organic nature. So for stock we picked a real felt, and to match the irregularity, we created large areas of thermography.

We also wanted the labels to be small to feel appropriate with the skein size, but stand out on shelf. The shine of the thermography and adding a silver to further emphasize that in the label did the trick while matching the yarns positioning as a higher end product.

To take full advantage of the press sheet we created 14 different patterns using illustrations of stitches and deconstructed skeins. Moving to a sticker system from a full offset process allows for shorter, quicker turn print runs, and so the project was cost neutral with the previous labels.

Production Lesson(s)

The tags feature a two colour black, we wanted to use a flat black and the shiny raised irregular black thermography, but realised looking at samples that we needed to spec an 'off-black' for our second black to get contrast.

We worked hard on the stickers to get a good finish look of shiny but not too heavy - they are printed on an hp Indigo in white and black on silver foil style substrate with a Matte Laminate to bring the silver down.

In terms of lessons, we found the registration on the thermography pretty loose. We also discovered after a few runs that a .5" sticker was too small for the printer to do in small numbers–they just repeat too fast on the roll at their size, which was unfortunate, as a big part of the brief was something where we could run small numbers of yarn stickers and colour stickers on demand.”
