Project Description

Making use of the screen printing setup that I built in my apartment, I designed and printed an edition of 66 posters showcasing three of my favorite parts of Northeast Minneapolis: Trains, Bikes, and Beer. I began this project by developing a simple modular iconographic system for the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District and experimented with overprint to come up with a playful and inviting poster set with the area in mind.

Production Lesson(s)

This edition of posters was a bit of a guinea pig project with my home setup. I had to experiment with my process and burning the screen properly took quite a lot of trial and error. Once my production process was perfected, the actual printing went very smoothly. There is an extra sense of satisfaction that I find when I go through an entire process with only my hands in the mix. I really wanted a gritty or slightly imperfect feel to the prints and after quite a bit of experimentation, I ended up flicking screen filler on the screen with an old toothbrush. I also definitely learned a lot about overprinting and the vital mixing of ink and base extender when going through this process. There were many test runs of colors but the final run captured the relationship between layers that I was aiming for in the beginning.”
