Fully titled “The Gosh-dang-it-mommy-fudging-ham-sandwich Reactions of Kimmy Schmidt” is the result of having loved Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s debut season and Ellie Kemper’s role. It was her reactions to things that caught my attention so I decided to make a collection of them. I originally intended to do it as a poster because that’s what people do, right? But the reactions on their own didn’t make a lot of sense so they needed more editorial heft and that’s when I decided to do it as a limited edition book that didn’t cost an arm and a leg to produce while having a fun charm to it.

The whole thing is done in the limited color palette of yellow, pink, and purple — Kimmy’s signature colors! — and makes great use of Neenah’s Astrobright papers that have a superb brightness and vibrancy so I was able to print a single color on each color stock and it makes the book feel quite rich in production. “Signatures” were printed in a large sheet, then those were trimmed, scored, folded, and drilled, and then I collated them all, bound them with a pink shoelace, and prepped 100 packages.

Project Description

A collection of the funniest, quirkiest, most heartfelt reactions by Kimmy Schmidt from the show's debut season made infinitely more memorable by her choice of words, construction of sentences, and outdated innocence. Each reaction is accompanied by the episode number and context in which it happened, its time stamp, and the type of emotion that fueled it.

Production Lesson(s)

Even with silkscreen, light colors on dark stock is not 100%. The yellow on the purple stock required three passes with the squeegee and still wasn't as opaque as I would have liked.”
