This exhibition catalog for Bright Lights Dark City showcases the work made by Toronto artists in the motion picture film workspace Niagara Custom Lab. Exposing experimental work with a spine reading “exposed film,” this book translates the ephemeral and hands-on nature of the Lab with budget-conscious finishing.

Project Description

Bright Lights Dark City: Niagara Custom Lab and Toronto Experimental Film explores the anarchic spaces of Niagara Custom Lab–a motion picture film lab for artists in Toronto–and the remarkable local culture it encourages, embodies, and sustains.  Niagara processes celluloid in ways no other lab will, treating it like the most versatile of artists’ mediums: a canvas coated in chemistry. The book brings together nine artists, both emerging and established, whose documentary and conceptual work showcases the significance of the lab to diverse projects and practices. The spine of the book is covered in "exposed film" tape–much like the decorated walls of the lab itself.

Production Lesson(s)

The lab's walls are decorated with film box tops and 'exposed film' tape–I wanted to incorporate this ephemera into the book in some way and applying the 'exposed film' tape to the spine was a good budget-conscious solution. I did this by hand, in a somewhat imprecise way, and that ended up being my favourite part of the project–when the books are stacked the tape makes an irregular repeated pattern, and to me that really captures something of the spirit of the lab. I'd like to incorporate more handwork into future projects.”
