12 — We Made This Anniversary Brochure

A rainbow made out of ten different paper stocks will always get a project a spot on the best of year. Plus everything on the project is 10-related, making it an interesting solution to a self-imposed rule.

11 — Banned Books 2014 Poster

Projects that require 3D glasses can sometimes turn out gimmicky but on this print there is a groovy payoff between the currency-style graphics visible to the naked eye and the hip line-art revealed with the included decoder.

10 — Matière Noire Business Card

A little bondage action is going on in these hand-stringed business cards with a custom notch for the fashionable black string. The lovely icon and typography letterpressed seal the deal.

9 — Cranky Pressman Crank Letter

Letterpress is usually reserved for business cards and prints, not for a letter, but the medium works perfectly for this off-kilter and over the top missive from a cranky pressman railing against internet culture.

8 — Charles S. Anderson at AIforGA Poster

Charles S. Anderson and team demonstrate why they are (and have always been) the reigning champions of clip-art graphics and registration tricks with this great set of white-and-gold-ink prints on their go-to stock, French Paper.

7 — Sanrun Mining Business Card

The design of the card itself is okay but the iridescent foil stamping on the edge of the cards is irresistible. The production trick isn’t gratuitous either as the company specializes in manganese excavation and mining.

6 — Festival 10 Sentidos Collateral

I am a big fan of mirror paper — we rocked it for Debbie Millman’s AIforGA poster last year — and, in this case, I really like the play of the brochures’s title with the imperfect reflection the paper generates. The chiseled typography helps sell the dimensional effect quite well.

5 — Pamella Roland Invitation

Great paper, a creative fold, a perfect dose of foil stamping make this one of my favorite invitations, feeling more like a hand-made gift waiting to be open than a throwaway invitation.

4 — The Grand Budapest Hotel Print

No one does the half-tone earthy overlay texturing better than Alex Pearson and this sprawling print for The Grand Budapest Hotel Print is as eccentric in its rendition as the movie.

3 — Arjowiggins Creative Papers Bookmark

The award for most extreme use foil stamping goes to these bookmarks that echo layers of soil and clay and the such, giving them a gem-like presence.

1 — Conversations on Finnish Art Education

At first glance, these books don’t look like much, with their unassuming serif typography and oddly-colored backgrounds but the hat trick is in the production. Each cover is unique and is “generated” on press by swirling the ink around directly on the screen right before the squeegee hits it. Some of the covers look downright haunting as chance and ink develop into funky scenes for readers to interpet.
