Lead Image

Looking at the images I can’t help but picture my niece and nephews who live in Singapore enjoying the various scenarios that are beautifully printed and bound in this horizontal book. From the cover, to the stunning images, and the details that bring both of these together this is a book I would like to add to my collection.

Project Description

€˜Points of Departure is an exploration of the notion of individual and collective remembrance of the changing seascape through time by visual artist, Juria Toramae. An island nation—surrounded by the sea and one that has underwent tremendous physical changes in the landscape in the past 50 years, this reflective piece of work that will be presented as part of SG50 celebrations culminates in at a very significant moment of Singapore’s history. An artist book consolidated the images by Juria as well as compiled anecdotes and interviews collected during the project. An exhibition was also held at the National Library building, 1-28 April 2015. As the artist’s work takes centerstage in the publication and the exhibition, the art direction recedes into the back in subtlety. A gradually diminishing half-tone effect is applied onto the simple logotype design to reinforce the artist’s message. This visual element presents itself at various points of the publication along the bottom edge, just as sea waves gently ebbs and flows along the shoreline.

Production Lesson(s)

It was tough to have the logotype design with its gradual halftone effect rendered faithfully on the linen-textured Efalin cover stock so the design had to be adjusted slightly so accommodate the limitation of the foil stamp method as well as the textured substrate.”
