Project Description

On the Jewish holiday of Purim, it's customary to give gifts of food to friends, called mishloach manot in Hebrew and shalach manos in Yiddish. I've been designing my own mishloach manot boxes the last few years as seasonal self-promotional pieces that carry with them a deep connection to heritage and tradition. These boxes were inspired by an episode in the Book of Esther (which tells the story of Purim) in which King Achashverosh/Ahasuerus commands Haman to parade Mordecai around the city in appreciation for saving the king's life. I cut the paper with a desktop cutting machine into horse bodies and then gave them Dum Dum lollipop legs. The horses' right sides have an incised Purim message from me, and the left sides features a quote from the Book of Esther (6:11): "Thus shall be done to the man the king wishes to honor," forcibly declared by Haman as he leads Mordechai down the streets of Shushan. The text and details are cut, not printed, and the boxes are held together with interlocking tabs so as to not adhesives. English and Hebrew lettering was custom-designed for this project. Happy Purim!

Production Lesson(s)

I had designed very snug holes in the paper for the lollipop legs to fit through that would be tight enough to hold the the body in place. I realized it was much easier to use one lollipop stick to poke all the holes first and then insert all four lollipops than to insert the lollipops one at a time.”
