The latest installment of The Beauty of Letterpress takes me to a small restaurant in New York many years ago to a lovely lunch with Elaine Lustig Cohen that revolved around design—we were working on Graphic Design Referenced and she was a great source of information, passion for design, and the work of her late husband Alvin Lustig. Recently she has been working on a font based on his work, using just four simple shapes. Under her guidance, Craig Welsh developed two designs that have been printed using two different color combinations and letterpressed to perfection. That is reason alone to get one (or more), but your purchase also helps support the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum

Project Description

This collection of four letterpress prints was created for The Beauty of Letterpress by Neenah, to help support the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. The inspiration for the collection is the Lustig Elements font.

The Lustig Elements font is a revived font that modernist designer Alvin Lustig began working on in the 1930's, but never finished. I worked to complete this font, with the help of award-winning designer Elaine Lustig Cohen. Upon completion of the font, we launched a Kickstarter to help produce the font as wood type with the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, as well as a digital font with P22 Type Foundry.

The Lustig Elements Collection of prints are designed to pay homage to Lustig's modernist work. I used the four shapes —€” elements —€” that are used to create every letter of the Lustig Elements font, and transformed them into patterns. The completed collection includes four prints, two different patterns in two different colorways.

The prints are letterpressed in five colors, on Crane's Lettra Cover Fluorescent White 110C and printed on a vintage Vandercook Press. Letterpress guru George Graves, Fabrik, hand cranked 100 of each of the four editions -- with precise registration. (Seriously, look at that registration.)

The prints are on sale at beautyofletterpress.com, with 100% of the proceeds going to help support the efforts of the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in restoring and preserving historic wood type and the art of letterpress.
