Love. In this case, love of a designer for the new letterpress he purchased and is now experimenting with. Love from the designer for the craft from idea to finished product, and the growing understanding of the process and its challenges.

Project Description

I recently worked on a project with designer Mike Smith of Smith and Diction. It is an 8x10 inch print of a well known design of his, a stamp that reads, "LOVE". It is the first of an ongoing series of prints that I am working on with other talented designers that want to use the medium of letterpress, but might not have the chance because of its price point to access. I recently was able to purchase my largest press to date, a 12 × 18 inch Kluge Letterpress. It also gives me an opportunity to learn my press better! The print is available for sale for those who are interested. This is printed on French Paper Co. 140# Cover Pure White, and printed in 3 colors.

Production Lesson(s)

Large floods of color are tricky to achieve consistently with letterpress. Though the press can accommodate a larger sheet, it can only hold a finite amount of ink (I am still working out some of the kinks in inking large surfaces, though I now know a lot more!). ”
