When working on a project it is important to have lots of ideas. Often the success of the project lies in editing the grandiose in favor of the simple—such was the case in this DIY Haggadah.

Project Description

Seder is the focal point of the Passover holiday. It's a time to gather friends, family, and strangers, recount the Exodus story, and eat a whole lot of food - sans leavened bread. The Haggadah is the book that guides participants through all the steps leading up to the meal. They're usually not that well designed or very expensive to buy in sets.

As a cohost of a Seder this year, I made a set of Haggadahs that are easy to read, not too big to hold at a table laden with food plates, and inexpensive to produce. The books guide the evening's discussion around the parallels between biblical liberation and today's world, while questioning the kinds of freedoms that are presently taken for granted. Because of the importance of dialogue throughout the night, each cover has a drawing inspired by the weaving, back-and-forth nature of a long conversation.

Production Lesson(s)

I had a lot of grandiose ideas for what this Haggadah could be - fold-outs, pockets, alternating colored papers, transparencies, etc. But when I started writing and designing, it became clear that the book needed to encourage conversation rather than overpower it. The best solution for this purpose was to keep the printing and materials simple and straightforward. It didn't hurt to keep costs down either! ”
