The main production concern for these book covers came long before printing—by finding the exact instruments, pressure, and technique required to obtain the perfect level of texture. The experimental phase, which might have been frustrating at times, paid off once printed in two lovely hues.

Project Description

I was commissioned by the most prestigious Hungarian literature publisher, Magvető Kiadó, to design the covers for the 2017 editions of their annually released contemporary Hungarian prose and poetry anthologies called Körkép (first published in 1964) and Szép versek (first published in 1963). Since 1964 the books have always been published in pairs. I wanted to create something simple, classical with a modern overtone, and add “physical human touch” to the design. Except the typography and the barcodes the whole cover is hand-drawn and scanned in at full size.

Production Lesson(s)

The most important thing was to achieve the feeling of an actual physical drawing on the covers. First I had to test several paper and pencil combinations to be able to find the best texture that would work well for scanning and printing too. Pencils that were too soft didn't give enough contrast so the texture was too homogeneous. After that I had to find the right balance of levels while working on the scanned in files and preparing it for printing to make it look as real as possible. ”
