Simple graphics, academic typography, and primary colors weave lies into truth for this work of pseudo-knowledge. Stranger than fiction, or too good to be true?

Reverence Library is a series of abridged pocket encyclopaedias, 'inspired by fact and reworked by fiction' -- essentially, reference books with lies in it. Writers and artists interpret three subjects through fiction and illustration, the results of which split into three sections denoted by their own complimentary spot colours. The design references traditional educational book series through a limited colour palette, simple pictograms, and diminutive format.

The main challenge was to create a design that would be robust enough to withstand future volumes, without becoming too staid. Also, reconciling the visual nature and format of a reference book (ostensibly), with that of a book of fiction was a tough balance, but achieved mostly through the relationship between Apercu and Plantin -- Apercu is simple and geometric enough to feel educational, but has enough character to contrast with the sober Plantin.

Americans are beginning to rediscover and reinvent a food culture that has been abused and forgotten for half a century. People are learning to appreciate the variety and history heirloom vegetables have to offer in contrast to genetically modified corporate crops. I asked Rebecca McClain to list her 9 favorite heirloom plants, along with some info about planting and saving their seeds, for this series of postcards. You could mail these postcards and let the USPS shred them to pieces but I think they would look great in a frame.

Manic 10th Anniversary Book

Sometimes it takes getting your hands dirty to really clean up, and that's what Singapore-based Manic has done with their spotless, 10-year anniversary promotional piece. Better late than never, but, as their clients know, never late is better.

This book took forever (something like two years) to write, design and lay out. Whenever a paid project came along, it got shelved. Whenever we were unsatisfied with the design, it got stalled.

The lesson here is, when it comes to personal projects, to keep pressing on no matter how many times you've "hit the wall". The old adage is true: It's better late than never. And even though it's late (we had the foresight to start on it a whole year earlier), we're terribly glad that it's done.

The other lesson is that a self-promotional piece is highly personal. This wasn't obvious to us, and we delegated it several times. But it never worked. It was only when we rolled up our sleeves and really got our hands dirty with the writing and design, that the book started to come together and to feel "real" and honest. Also, printing on uncoated stock is not for the faint-hearted.

Rewined Candle Packaging

These candles are like those bags that say, "I used to be a plastic bottle," except they say, "I used to be another candle." Then you can recycle them again and then they will say, "trust me, I used to be a lot of candles."

Rewined Candles are smart, aromatic, recycled candles that were in need of updated packaging. These handsome candles are all natural soy wax candles poured into discarded wine bottles. They have a family of intoxicating scents which are all designed to mimic flavors and aromas you find in your favorite varietals of wines. We redesigned their logo using hand-drawn type and redesigned his kraft paper labels with simple typography and a layered labeling system. Each candle has a "vintage and producer" label, allowing each candle to be signed and dated by the candle maker. A wood veneer wax topper sits on top of the candle to keep them clean and free of dust before use. We also developed a color system using wax seals to color code each varietal scent and finished off the packaging with a small green sticker reminding each purchaser to please recycle again. To top it all off, each label was letterpressed and hand applied making these candles truly unique and handcrafted.

Our biggest challenge was to find a paper that was thick enough to show the quality of letterpress printing but that still looked great when wrapped around the candle. We also had to take into consideration that the candle would produce heat and so we tested several different adhesives to ensure that the packaging would stay intact.

Glow-In-The-Dark Poster Surprise

Delightful by day and naughty by night, this poster showcases the cleverness of designer and screenprinter alike. The slimy underbelly of city life never glowed so bright.

As my local screen printer, David Chad will attest, anytime you're trying to create a 9-color screen print (including two different layers of different intensities of phosphorescence) in a non-air-conditioned garage in Florida in September, you're going to have to be on your toes. Luckily David is the Obi-Wan of screen printing. I worked closely with him throughout the printing process and learned a ton. First off, both screens and paper stretch and contract quite a bit throughout the printing process (especially in said humid garage) and we had to approach each film, screen and color individually to account for what had happened after applying the last color (by hand, by the way...no automatic machines). What a lot of people don't realize is that a screen print is a living, breathing thing and not an exact, perfect science. Things change as you go and you have to adapt to get your desired results. What may have been perfect in my computer has been through several different processes by the time you're laying down ink (printing, photographing for film, printing film, exposing the screen) and everything is a bit different. David accounted for this by approaching each layer of film as a new project, cutting it apart and re-assembling before exposing the screen to account for everything that had happened before on each sheet of paper. A lot of printers don't bother with this, simply printing what was given to them as quickly as possible and blaming the designer for the result. Needless to say, I have a ton of respect for David and his skills. It takes a lifetime to learn the intricacies that can make a good print great.

"The Adventures of You and I" Book

Please excuse us while we use our own blog for some self promotion, although we sense that this may be of interest to plenty of our readers, as we feel there is a good chance that many of you are moms or dads, aunts or uncles, or even grandpas and grandmas, so… Our latest project at UnderConsideration headquarters is The Adventures of You and I, a one-of-a-kind children book, customized on demand to each kid, printed individually, and hand-bound. Illustrated by my wife and partner Bryony and written with all the silliness of a 5-year-old by me.

Each book is produced off of a master Adobe InDesign file in which we turn on and off a multitude of layers to customize hair style and color, skin color, the kid's favorite color, and whether they use glasses or not. We also do a simple find-and-replace to customize the text of the story to include the kid's name. We then print it on our somewhat trusty Epson R1800 on Letter-size sheets of Mohawk Navajo. We chose an offset paper as we wanted something nicer, more unique, and (more importantly) way less expensive than specialty inkjet paper. We print one side, let it dry a little, then stick back all the fronts and print the backs. Covers are laminated and then the whole book is hand-sewn on a typical Singer sewing machine. It's a little labor intensive and we'll keep streamlining the process as the more orders come in.

So, if you know a kid who is tired of reading about the adventures of Dora, Olivia, Fancy Nancy, Clifford, or some other mainstream character, this book places each kid right in the middle of the story as the main character.

Ribbon Type Specimen

Ribbon, designed by Dan Gneiding, is a lovely and cautiously ornate typeface sold by Lost Type under their "pay what you want" model. Except that if you pay $30 or more you get one of the most fun and nicely crafted type specimens I have seen in a while. Printed in two vibrant colors, Dan and his guest designers bring to life Ribbon in a way that makes you pay not just what you want but what Dan deserves.

There were a few cost saving devices which, when used in a unique way, ended up adding character and value to the book, not taking away.

Most notably is probably the binding. Side stitching with staples can end up looking like a last minute business meeting had out. Elongating the 'spine' and having a die-cut window wrap around the edge turned what could have looked like cheap binding into a more considered, deliberate solution. It also allowed for an orange bleed to be printed on each page hidden in the spine which creates the illusion of edging in the die-cut window.

The cover was left unprinted and hand embossed after the books were printed and bound. We used an custom plate in an extra long reach desk top embosser.

Hermès Holiday Card

As part of a new year's special event, Hermès thanked guests to their Athens store with these hand-embroidered cards commemorating the contemporary artisan concept that informed Hermès 2011.

The holiday illustration (with our studio's signature dot pattern) was silk-screened on book-binding cardboard. The Hermès brand orange color thread revealed "2012" by connecting the laser cut holes aligned on a custom-made type.

In the process of making this card we faced 2 problems. First the card-board was really rough and it was absorbing the white ink. To go fix that, my printer had to first silkscreen a UV varnish in advance to seal the cardboard, preventing the white color ink from soaking into the card.

The second problem was the laser cut that created the holes by burning the paper. While embroidering the card, the thread was getting really dirty by the time the second number was finished. I therefore had to constantly clean the thread and the holes and keep the needle in a cumbersome way.

I can hear the choo choo choo of this press chugging along as it creates the first product made from IKEA® parts that will actually last all the live long day.

IKEA®PRESS is a collection of experiments with letterpress printing. The constructive elements of IKEA® products substitute the traditional wooden printing letters and they become the printing die for limited editions. So can a stool or a door be used to impress their outline railtracks can become typographic, figurative or abstract compositions. The same elements can then be assembled back in the objects they belonged to. By doing so they get back their functionality, but they keep a sign of the printing process, they took part in and become themselves unique industrial products.

Every day is unique and fun when seen through a kaleidoscope. Tie them all together with a mustache and you're looking at a good year ahead of you.

This year my inspiration is the kaleidoscope because it is, for me, a great source of beautiful and hypnotic images, always new and never repeated; and that was just means every single day in every year, unique and unrepeatable.

The major challenge was to create an original and useful mechanism to hang the calendar on the wall, easy to handle, send (to other countries) and to change sheets every month; so I decided to create an exclusive branded shape design to be laser-cutted, using aluminum posts to bring all the sheets together on the hanger.

Put an egg(nog) on it! These coasters come with a pre-glossed glass or cup stain so that you don't feel guilty about ruining the adorable illustrations. Plus, it should be required that all Christmas gifts use candy cane-colored string.

The coasters were printed on a durable 40pt smooth silk paper with rounded corners and a spot UV varnish on both sides. The tags were printed on a 12pt smooth silk paper with an emboss and a die cut for the candy cane string to hold it all together.

This collection of Holiday cards featuring quotes from popular Holiday movies — I embarrassingly can only guess one — are not only hot to look at but are also a must-rub as they are silkscreened with a thicker more raise-y ink on a bunch of different papers. For some on-the-scene photos of the printing go here.

During the printing of these cards we ran out of ink. Being up against a deadline we had the idea to try out some plastisol ink instead. The one downside to using plastisol is it needs to reach over 300ºF to fully set. Heating the paper in between colors was pretty tricky. Sometimes the paper warped or shrunk, so registration on the second color was very difficult. In the end we were able to pull some awesome looking prints. Using plastisol gave the cards a real unique look, the ink sort of lays on top of the paper and it has a really awesome raised/tactile feel to it.
