Two Down, Two to Go

A warm appreciative thanks to everyone that made it to the event last night and participated with your generous laughter and attention for Ed Fella’s and Post Typography’s insights.

There will be video available for this event, so as soon as we have our hands on that we will post it here. Also, if anyone has any images they would like to share, do let us know.

This site will probably be dormant through the Summer, until we return in preparation for our third event in October with Margo Chase and Carin Goldberg.

Post Typography Balloon

For a lecture hosted at Harvard’s Carpenter Center, designed by Le Corbusier, Post Typography designed their lecture poster on a silver foil balloon.

Ed Fella Flyer

This is only one of hundreds of “after the fact” flyers that Ed has created as souvenirs for attendees of events.

Post Typography Rocks, Literally

Aside from handy typographic skills, Nolen (on microphone) and Bruce (on microphone and bass) along with Denny Bowen (on drums) headline the punk band Double Dagger. Here is their myspace page too. Rollingstone.com called them “Skull-fuckingly loud.” You can take their word for it, or you can hit play on the video below.

Letters, Letters Everywhere

Letters on America Book

One of our favorite books around UnderConsideration’s headquarters is Ed’s Letters on America, a persistently addictive collection of Fella’s work and polaroid snapshots of the typography in our environment. Before Ed had a web site, this was one of the few printed objects that showcased some of his work too.

Alphabet Catalog

A slightly different take on gathering lettering — specifically the 26 letters that make up most of the lettering — is Post Typography’s An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering and Experimental Typography. Curated and designed for Artscape, Alphabets gathered the work of “48 artists and designers [that] conceived and interpreted the alphabet in surprising and inventive ways, ranging from graceful and polished to witty and unconventional.” The results can be seen in the catalog, or in the traveling exhibition, currently hoisted in Seattle.

Additional Notes about these Opposites

Detail of Lettering

Finding an opposite for Ed would appear to be the simplest of chores, given his highly individual style that yields remarkable new typographic compositions unlike anything else. Pretty much everyone from Bill Cahan, to Kyle Cooper, to Doyald Young, to Mike Perry is a potential opposite — and out of everyone we decided Post Typography would be the best fit.

We looked for someone that was young, with a vested interest in typography and pushing it beyond its typical boundaries, and someone that displayed a conscientious stance on doing things differently out of belief rather than for style — not that any of the designers mentioned above are only stylists. In our minds, Nolen and Bruce fit this criteria through their work: Which always feels accessible and something that designers can strive for, but that always displays an incisive edge, in concept or execution, that sets Nolen and Bruce apart.

To put it in a less wordy way, and as our initial gut reaction: Ed’s and Post Typography’s work is amazing, it makes us jealous that they can do it so effortlessly, and there is surely some opposite modus operandi going on here.

OA’08: Ed Fella • Post Typography

The second evening of opposites are Ed Fella, and Nolen Strals and Bruce Willen of Post Typography, a trio of designers that are bending the rules, possibilities and expectations of typography to create enviable results that are particularly unique to each of them — all with decidedly opposite results. As we share some of their work and highlight some of their background in the coming weeks, we presume the differences and similarities will quickly be apparent.
