After three and a half years we felt it was time to rethink Quipsologies, which has been a slow-but-steady grower within our network of blogs, and has served as an ongoing excuse for us to spend time online looking at cool things. Although we liked the simplicity and directness of the previous version we decided to get a little more ambitious with it and, to be honest, we love the process of redesigning our own web sites. So, here is what’s new and what’s old.

Images
The main change is that there are now big, juicy images. We are visual people and respond better to graphic stimulus, so why avoid the obvious? Plus, honestly, there were times where something was so hard to describe in words that we just passed on posting it. Now we can just show it to you.

Open Stream, Closed
The second biggest change is that we have taken away the ability for anyone to immediately post on what we called the “Community” side. Our main reason for doing this is that many people took advantage to link to their own sites to drive traffic, rather than making thoughtful contributions that weren’t self-serving. We still believe in the contributions of our readers so we have made it very easy to submit Quips through the form to your left.

Team Effort
We noticed that the best Community Quips in the last three years came from recurring contributors, so we have invited them to be official contributors and help us generate content. Our inaugural Quipsologists have been contributing to the site for many years and we are delighted they will continue to do so. They are: Plamen, Doug Bartow, Josh Berta, James I Bowie, Ricardo Cordoba, and Diane Zerr. We are happy to hear from anyone who might be interested in becoming a regular contributor.

Variety
While we will focus on short Quips that point elsewhere, you can expect some variety with original content and slightly longer bits of writing and visual essays, as well as the opportunity to comment on these. You will also see more Quips about branding and identity as well as of printed projects because Quipsologies now will also serve as a feed for interesting links to Brand New and FPO. From the Archives drop-down menu you can see the Quips that have been tele-transported to those sites.

Nice Type
This is our first foray into web fonts and we are using Typekit to render P22 Underground, Skolar Web by TypeTogether, and Coquette by Mark Simonson. Since PC computers render these fonts like dog food, we have an alternate style sheet that can be switched to from underneath the Quipsologies logo for those who prefer to see things in Arial and Georgia.

Thanks
That’s it. We hope you enjoy the new version.

We Kid, because we Love
The above are an homage to our favorite blogs, from which we regularly draw content to populate Quipsologies. If we didn’t get the link first, you can be sure that they did, and that’s why we come back to them time and again.

A welcoming comment so that this space doesn't get lonely.

David Airey’s comment is:

Excellent redesign, Armin. Curious about the site width on Brand New, though. It's wider than Quips, yes? I get a little horizontal scrolling on Brand New using my 15inch.

on 09.01.2010 at 06:22 AM

Armin’s comment is:

Yes, it's like 20 or 40 pixels wider. It has an additional 20 pixel border around it, so if a lot of people find it annoying I could just get rid of it.

Josh Berta’s comment is:

Cool to see the web fonts working... must admit, I've been a bit too busy to investigate that brave new world.

As for Stanley Kubrick... I might have to link to stuff about him occasionally. Sorry?

Rondal’s comment is:

First time visitor to the Q, though I've been following FPO and Brand New for some time. I'm digging the new layout and the mock ads are a nice touch. I haven't really ever visited most of those sites before, with the exception being Ffffound!, but after I saw that ad I instantly got it. Great work!

Fionn’s comment is:

Gorgeous redesign.

Thanks!

on 09.01.2010 at 09:28 AM

Armin’s comment is:

Josh, I hear ya. I was very hesitant and pessimistic about it. Sites that have used web fonts in the last year or so were painfully slow to load up the fonts, they were probably using SiFR or something.

Typekit, which is what we are using, is so quick. It's well priced and easy to use. With a great selection.

Font Bureau's WebType also looks good, and their fonts look very nice on screen.

The biggest hurdle right now is the way they display on PCs, which is like aliased cat vomit, so if you are a concerned citizen like we are you have to develop an alternate style sheet so that the cat vomit doesn't look so pukey.

Jim’s comment is:

What's the point of the left column and top modules (and the timestamps everywhere) if you're going to make the font size unreadably tiny? That's not web design.

on 09.01.2010 at 09:52 AM

Logan’s comment is:

Great redesign! I never quite "got" where Quipsologies fit in the World of Under Consideration, but I think this clears up a lot. Really nice refresh.

Jim it's called command+ (isn't one of the tenets of web design that things are variable and users can ultimately control things like font size to suit their tastes? Really not trying to start a fight here, just saying...)

on 09.01.2010 at 10:01 AM

Diane Zerr’s comment is:

If I had a FFFFOUND! account, I would totally post that image about them. Hilarious!

Love the new site! :)

on 09.01.2010 at 10:13 AM

Armin’s comment is:

Jim. It's all relative. If you have huge screen ratio, yes, it will look small. On other screens it looks just fine. I'm not being flippant, just saying that what is tiny to some is not tiny to others.

Diane, good idea. Just added it to ffffound myself.

Lula’s comment is:

LOVE the new redesign. The color palette is fantastic. The only thing I wish is that the links were set up to automatically open in a new window/tab. Since, for my uses, Quipsologies is amazing for browsing, I want to be able to return to the original site without having to reload it again or use the back button a trillion times.

Other than that (which has plagued me for awhile), it's GORGEOUS!

on 09.01.2010 at 01:44 PM

Renee’s comment is:

Great colors, love the new images. However, the web fonts are rendering very narrow and hard to read on my browser (IE) so I switched back to HTML.

Also I second Lula's comment about opening links in new windows. I'm often playing catch-up on Quipsologies, reading over 10-15 at a time which makes going back to the page tricky. Just something to think about in the future.

on 09.01.2010 at 03:58 PM

Armin’s comment is:

Links opening in new windows has been implemented. We were on the fence about it, but agree it's better suited for Quips to open in new window.

on 09.01.2010 at 04:38 PM

Jim’s comment is:

Because what is tiny to some is not tiny to others, a good web designer chooses fonts that are readable on different kinds of screens/devices. Your use of tiny fonts is so 1998 web design and makes it seems like the content is irrelevant on those modules.

Relative to almost every other site on the web, your fonts are small. I'm not going to make sites giant in my browser just to make this one site readable.

on 09.01.2010 at 07:19 PM

Cheshire’s comment is:

Gorgeous redesign. Even with TypeKit turned off it looks amazing, but with TypeKit on, it's just brilliantly refreshing. Congrats!

on 09.01.2010 at 07:28 PM

Jim’s comment is:

Opening links in a new window is also so old school (and downright annoying on an iPad/iPHone), especially since it's not obvious that the giant images on your front page go to a different site.

If someone want to open in a new window/tab, they can hold onto the Command (or Control in Windows) key when they click, otherwise links should open in the window the page is in.

This is a smart blog. I mean it. You have so much knowledge about this issue, and so much passion. You also know how to make people rally behind it, obviously from the public responses. Youve got a design here thats not too flashy, but makes a statement as big as what youre saying. Great job, indeed.
