Venezuela: Overshadowed by Politics

Venezuela’s political situation overshadows any good thing that is happening in that country. Fortunately a small group of people that operate under the name of Masa are trying to bring focus to design, art and glitzy graphics. Their work ranges from print to motion graphics, and in the near future, some typefaces for t-26.

Their latest effort comes in the form of a book, entitled Latino. It compiles graphics, art and other good looking shapes from latin designers spread throughout the world.

A brave effort during hard times.

This post made me think (tangentially) of some pieces I received a while back during the crisis in Argentina (not that its a whole lot better now from what I hear). Some beautiful grungy graphics by Argentine students directly addressing the political turmoil. Check them out here.

Always interesting to see what comes out during times of political turmoil.

Speaking of Argentina and political turmoil, Typographica had an interesting review about a type magazine in Argentina called tipografica.

Unfortunately, this book neither address nor reflect any political issues in Venezuela. It looks just like any other book that celebrates the language of Bro Destruct. Conceptually, it doesn't do anyting for me. Visually, it lacks personality.

Natasha, I was referring to the Argentina posters, though Tipographica looks to be interesting (again, I wish I could read spanish) considering that they interview Jan van Torn, one of my personal heroes.

Kevin, sorry for mis-quoting you. I was referring to the book Latino. It's just sad to see that designers often react only to the LOOK of things, but not their content.

It's not the intention of the book to address nor reflect the political issues of that country. My intention was that even when a country is going to the dogs some people manage to do what they love. And putting together a book in a situation like that, when you can't even go get a tank of gas, or mail the necessary documents to your publisher because FedEx ain't working is worth mentioning.

Yes, it is.

Still, another example of style over substance.
