Design Book Club - Book No. 1

The first book we will be doing will indeed be The Cheese Monkeys by Chip Kidd. This is the famous book designers first shot at writing one. Refer to Amazon or elsewhere for a description or excerpts. I’ve been through this book once already and enjoyed it very much. The insane ending deserves a second reading anyway. Please buy (or borrow) the book by March 17th. We’ll post some polite reminders when the deadline approaches. I highly suggest getting the hardcover edition, I’ve never seen a cover design like it. Every single surface of the book is well thought out and used appropriately. I was able to find a used copy of the hardcover for $8, so do what you can. It should be rather inexpensive. If anyone finds any deals other than at amazon, please post them here. Armin may also be setting up an amazon referral account. So watch this thread for details.

Ok. Finally figured out the associate stuff.

Use this link to buy the book through our affiliation:

The Cheese Monkeys (New + Used)

Of course this wouldn't be complete without the reassurance of a brand:

That sucks. I just bought it yesterday through Amazon on my own.

Sorry. Can't wait to participate though.

I would just like to mention an interesting coincidence. Oprah has restarted her Book Club after a year long hiatus, on the same day the Graphic Design Book Club at SpeakUp becomes official.

I won't sleep well tonight.

> Oprah - Speak Up

We are both based in Chicago. Is there some mystical connection? I'm gonna hire Dr. Phil to do some psychological evaluations too.

Sorry Armin, I ordered before the affiliate was setup, but I do have the book, and hopefully will have time to read it. Should we setup an email notifcation of posts related to the Book Club discussion?

No worries. For the next book we'll have a better system worked out.

>Should we setup an email notifcation of posts related to the Book Club discussion?

That sounds like a good idea.

>By "we" I guess I mean you :)

Ha. That's what we thought you meant.

That would be good. One element of SpeakUp that is sometimes difficult is the amount of posting/scrolling required.

Better than an empty board though!

Wow... “The ultimate in hip graphic design.”

I don't think I would ever categorize Chip Kidd, or his work, as hip. Smart, good, strong, good looking yes, but hip? I dunno.

So... What's the story on the discussion?
