What’s on your desk?

It’s time to resurrect this post - in keeping with that Friday feeling (though some might want to do this on Monday when they have a digital camera to hand).

Much along the lines of the Metropolis Cabinets of Curiosity article, stick some photos up of your area, space or creative environment.

If you want to post your image in the comments - then you can do one of two things.

1. upload the image to your server and include the HTML tag in your comment posting as a link to it. Like this: <img src=”http://www.YOURSERVER.COM/desk.jpg”>

2. email me the photo and I’ll stick it up and email you the URL. d at mdnstudio.com

Don’t worry if you can’t get around to this till next week, this is not just a Friday-only thing.

Bob’s comment is:

Yeah, it's a mess. You'll notice that I don't have any drawers so that necessitates piles. And I don't have a trashcan either. Those are my excuses.

The most important thing on my desk in the mornings:

And I too have few shelves - which makes for growing paper piles, that after reaching a certain height, get put away somewhere out of sight.

Luckily, I snapped this a few days ago for another project...

Patrick’s comment is:

I work at home, so I have to keep it clean. I don't even have a separate "office" room, and I can't stand to have my current jobs staring me in the face 24/7. So I always file them away at the end of the day. I guess I'm just virgo like that.

I also tend to move around, depending on what I am doing.

Todd, so modern - so black and white. You should work here.

Patrick, your room reminds me of your website. How consistent!

That Vignelli partners photo belongs in design clichés! Do you think they all wear Massimo and Leila-designed clothing?

Welcome to my world.

It looked really drab so I made a few of my favorite things float in space larger than life.

The green type from my site isn't actually in the room, ya know! That'd be like working in the batcave. I am wearing a shirt that color, though. Hmmm. Not sure what that says about me.

Dan- I want an egg cuber! Perfect metaphor of design for design's sake. How modern.

Tan’s comment is:

I know this is a little different, but I'm too busy right now to shoot my current desk -- so here's a QTVR of our office -- make sure to click on the stairway, which will take you up to the loft area (keep clicking if it sticks). But I'm actually in our other office most of the time now that we've merged..sigh. It's not nearly as cool -- I'll send more photos when I find a minute.

And here's the view from our rooftop deck.

Ok, here's my desk. It's at about defcon-3 right now. It's been more messy, and it's been neater.

What do you feed that printer? I'd be scared to work next to that thing for fear of being eaten.

Unless that's some kind of newfangled excercise equipment then nevermind...

Vainly sacrificing image sharpness for absence of flash.

Cleaned up today. This is my corner of the studio. Everyone else has a built in - boss gets the old IKEA butcher block. Can you tell it's below grade?

Points to anyone who can identify the DVD on the desk.

Curiously my desk is a lot tidier than I thought, there are normally more cigarette boxes and pointless pieces of paper on it.

I just got a cool add-on for my wall, courtesy of my lovely wife. She built all by herself.

It's a two-part metallic chalkboard/message board.

It has it's own customized chalk holder

And even it's own (also customized) magnets

Thank you wife!

Good God, Chris. Your studio looks like a page out of Pottery Barn or Design w/i Reach. Eames aluminum group chair, Tizio lamp, tank table and matching bookcase....damn you, I'm jealous.

Tan’s comment is:

uh-huh...right. my office table is a disaster area right now. There are stacks upon stacks of shit burying me.

My home office, or as I call it, page 143 from the IKEA catalog, is littered with toys and all sorts of paper crap that my wife leaves for me to look over.

sigh.

Christopher Simmons’s comment is:

I can't help myself: I'm addicted to stainless steel.

Of course my desks at work are a collection of piles and stacks and assorted collections of inspirational and utilitarian debris. It's shameful.

Interesting to see a couple people with Weingart"s Typography in their places. pgs 170 to 197 are some of my favs.
