Speak Up T-shirt Design Contest

That’s correct! You read the headline right! The first-ever design contest by Speak Up is here. Time to put your money where your mouth is. Or just put your money if you haven’t put your mouth before.

The contest will be open to everybody, except me and any other people in my household, as I will be making the final selection. In the spirit of Speak Up, the first round of voting will be democratic and we will choose our favorite three T-shirts, after that, it’s all up to me. The deadline is coming soon: September 12, 2003 at 11:59 pm Eastern time.

Enough talking, here are some guidelines in HTML format, also available as a PDF in the files you will download. Select your preferred compacted method of download and follow the instructions. You will need Acrobat Reader, Adobe Illustrator or Freehand (Corel users will be awarded negative points… ok, not really) and Adobe Photoshop or ImageReady to be able to participate.

Zip (416Kb)
Sit (362Kb)

GO!

PS. When you are done, send to tee@underconsideration.com.

Ahhh!!! We're now Typophile and k10k...and every other "design portal" on the web.

Just kidding. Game on is right Rick!

Your doom is imminent, little children.

Talk is cheap, so that'll be $1.50 chumps.

If anybody has any problems with the files please let me know. I'm sure we can work something out.

Does that include(open) or exclude (verbotten) a father in Mexico or a father in Mexico is considered "a people in my household" or perhaps a cousin in Mexico?

amanda’s comment is:

whee! I will kick all your asses.

Well, i probably won't. But I do intend on creating a submission.

If you are paying your own rent and not living under my roof you won't be considered a person in my household, so yeah, can submit a design. Dad.

This t-shirt needs to be synchronized!

David, you scare me. Like the movie "The Omen" kind of scary.

...and on brand! Whatever the hell that means.

On Aug.28.2003 at 03:30 PM
Tan’s comment is:

wait, I just read the rules.

your fucking cats are judging? Great. I mean, what the hell, there's just no point of dignity in design anymore.

hmmm....cat aesthetics call for a completely different concept strategy now...I gotta stop by the tuna cannery tonight....

jonsel’s comment is:

Don't forget "authentic", Sam.

On Aug.28.2003 at 04:44 PM
Sam’s comment is:

Believe me--I'm trying to find a way to spell 'authentic' using only the letters s-p-e-a-k-u-p.

Hank Richardson didn't teach me to follow no stinkin' rules!

Armin’s comment is:

You have to understand the target audience. Delve into their wants and needs. And synchronize, like David said.

On Aug.28.2003 at 05:03 PM
Sam’s comment is:

Let's have no talk of eating the audience!

On Aug.28.2003 at 05:42 PM
David E.’s comment is:

i have a question. will only the winning t-shirt be actually produced as a t-shirt? or are you reserving the right to produce any of them at any time in the future?

On Aug.28.2003 at 06:35 PM
Armin’s comment is:

David, only the winning t-shirt will get printed this time. The other two could be kept for future considerations, but it's really doubtful that I would use them. If they are really good, I'd be crazy not to though.

On Aug.28.2003 at 06:59 PM
Rick G’s comment is:

So not to play my hand too early, but I'm thinking maybe a swoosh, with the type faded back a bit. You know, set in Reflex Bule. It will be really "Edgy". Very "Out there". I want to capitalize on Speak Up's brand equity and reach our target demo.

...Or maybe I'll just set the type upside down. Flippin' it.

Why all the optional tee—colors? Black should be the only color produced so that we may wear it...

Darrel’s comment is:

Why do we need photoshop and imageready?

On Aug.29.2003 at 08:57 AM
Armin’s comment is:

Because Adobe pays me.

No not really. They are required to set up the lovely jpg you will be sending me.

KM’s comment is:

I don't have Photoshop. I use Disney photopaint.

Joe Pemberton’s comment is:

Armin, you could at least modify our tee contest template a little before you unabashedly ripped it off, especially since we launched our Second Annual Typophile Tee Contest on Monday. (Ahem, two days before yours.)

Just know that if our tee ever sees your tee after school, it better run. Fast.

All in good fun, Armin. Let the rivalry begin. Oh, and I'll talk to our winner afterward. Maybe he/she will share one of the prizes with your winner. =)

Armin’s comment is:

Oh, by the way. The template for the t-shirts is compleltely original, I did not copy it from any other place.

Ok, I did use typophile's template as a starting point. Why reinvent the wheel twice?

On Aug.29.2003 at 03:03 PM
Armin’s comment is:

>Ahem, two days before yours.

Yeah, that was terrible timing on your part, I mean... whatever.

>before you unabashedly ripped it off

I was kind of abashed.

Ok, props given where props are due. Thanks to typophile for letting me use their template without their express written consent and for not suing me. Right?

On Aug.29.2003 at 03:22 PM
Joe Pemberton’s comment is:

=)

I just couldn't resist the urge to rib you a little. Best of luck on your contest.

On Aug.29.2003 at 03:26 PM

Can we do a shirt that says "Type Up" and submit it for both contests?

On Aug.29.2003 at 04:04 PM
Darrel’s comment is:

I seriously do not own Photoshop. Am I disqualified? ;o)

Also the EPS is looking for a linked file 'tee_colors.jpg' which isn't included in the Stuffit archive.

Finally, is puncutation considered 'special characters'

Just want to be sure ;o)

On Aug.29.2003 at 05:16 PM
Armin’s comment is:

>Also the EPS is looking for a linked file 'tee_colors.jpg' which isn't included in the Stuffit archive.

Really? It should be placed in there. It's not that important a file. It's just a scan of the actual t-shirt colors. I don't have that file here at home. I'll post it for download next week.

>Finally, is puncutation considered 'special characters'

Yes. But you can use punctuation, by special characters I meant whacked stuff like @#%&

Joe Pemberton’s comment is:

If you don't have Photoshop or Imageready:

In recent versions of Illustrator you can use a "Save For Web" command under the "Edit" menu. Just turn off Layers 1 and 2, before you do it and you'll have a nice little GIF.

=)

On Aug.29.2003 at 08:50 PM
Darrel’s comment is:

Aw...I'm just being a smart ass. I got it working with FH and FW.

FYI, being the anal-web-geek that I am...these submissions would probably be more suited as GIFs, since we're only using 3 or 4 colors per file.

Armin’s comment is:

Yes, send gifs if you like. I'm still manupilating the final image as a gif... which would make your point even stronger.

Putting together a design contest is hard.

amanda’s comment is:

unless I use an existing illustration - i won't have time to do a submission. crappers. Anyhow, everyone else have fun. I will be away from speak up for two months because my husband & I are travelling Europe starting next week. Happy fall everyone.

Don't forget that the deadline is this friday. Nothing yet has blown me away... just so you know.

On Sep.08.2003 at 09:57 AM

Any chance you'll extend the deadline?

On Sep.12.2003 at 02:03 PM
Armin’s comment is:

Do you talk to your clients like that? Sheesh.

Fine, I'll extend just until this Sunday at 11:59 pm Eastern. Just so that people have an extra weekend to work on it. It doesn't have to come exactly at that time. Here is the deal, I get to work at 8:00 am Central, whatever downloads on that first batch is in, anything after that will not qualify.

Deal?
