Speak Up Goes to Vancouver

We were not just going to sit here, twiddling our thumbs, while everybody is out in Vancouver discussing graphic design. No way! We (more on we in the next paragraph) will be there and we will have a nice surprise for most of the attendees.

Regarding we, that would be Speak Up authors Tan, Debbie, Eric and me. Along with Speak Up regulars like Marian (who will be sporting all five of her self-designed T-shirts, hopefully not all at once), Michael Bierut, Dan Shafer, Adam Waugh, and a few more that I am forgetting (nothing personal).

The question I’ve gotten asked in the last couple of weeks is “will there be a Speak Up party?” The answer: you bet your behind there will be one. Obviously with everybody here being a bit far from Vancouver and not knowing the city we have had trouble deciding on where and what to do. As it stands right now we will be “hosting” (don’t expect free food nor booze, maybe the first round… maybe) a little soiree Friday night, around sevenish pm at the hip Alibi Room a few blocks away from the conference. Do stay tuned for more specific details. And definitely let us know if you are interested in coming, because we have a cool, cool, cool thing we want to give you…

All we can say is that, yes, it is indeed printed; it is two colors, green and gray; it’s in a silky smooth white paper; it has to do with the sheep (in one way or another) mentioned on our header; and that it is filled with, well, the best of what Speak Up has to offer. You will have to come and get a copy to see what the hell we are talking about.

Never been to the one in Vancouver, but the one in Seattle is what Tan would say is "wicked cool!"

Damn you all! I'm in Edmonton and too poor to get to Vancouver despite that I could be there in a few hours of driving, or like, an hour on the airplane. CURSES.

With a wickedly annoying web site. ;o)

Looks like a fun time. I hope to end up in Vancouver. Someday.

Tan’s comment is:

look for the table with people sporting tiny black glasses.

....

Just an important reminder for all you Yanks traveling to Vancouver.

Don't forget to BRING YOUR PASSPORTS.

US Customs is a bitch. Without proof of citizenship, you'll get a cavity search, then still be denied re-entry into the US. You'll have to become Canadian and add "u" to every other wourd :-)

some time late in august:

e: throw the mother of all irresponsible parties on the opening night.

a: That would be really cool. Maybe throw a TV through the window, very Pink Floydish... Better yet, throw a G5 out the window!

e: Pony keg of cheap beer. How could we not get some kind of booze sponsorship from a vodka company? Local rock band. Strippers. I imagine you with a tie around your forehead on the balcony overlooking the pool with "aiga went to bed hours ago" written on your stomach in fire-red lipstick.

...

i'll bring the lipstick.

Patrick’s comment is:

Hey y'all, I really wish I could have a drink with you, but one of the downsides of going out on your own is a lack of funds for such things in the beginning stages. I miss the days when my company would pay for employees to attend one conference per year.

Which begs the question. How many companies are still doing such a thing these days? I assume most of you that are attending are at least getting some covered by your company, no?

One of the keys to remaining wicked cool at this time of year in Vancouver is to carry an umbrella (black is safe, though mine, of course, is gold). You think the umbrella's uncool? Your other options are a) a soggy, dripping raincoat b) wet, flattened hair, soaked pants-cuffs, soggy collar and water droplets all over your tiny black glasses.

I'll be there if at all possible - unfortunately, my budget digs are about 2 miles away and I won't have my own car - but I'm thinking I'll do a little research on public transport. :)

This sounds like a great idea, and as a vancouverite I can vouch for the coolness of the Alibi. Excellent place to hang. See you there!
