Let me in your Inbox

First, thanks to everybody who has signed up for our mailing list. However, a lot of you may not actually be receiving anything, which is not an indication of our mailing list maintenance.

For instance, many Hotmail accounts will not receive e-mails because of the big recipient list. Then, many ISPs tag Speak Up e-mails as spam, some of you might do it on purpose, but for those of you who don’t you might want to talk to your system administrator. If you have a personal account that you manage manually I’d suggest you add speakup@underconsideration.com to your approved addresses. Another reason you might not be getting our e-mails is because of the content, this is an automatic response I got: The email server, did not deliver the message because the message contains the phrase “sexual” and “performance” in close proximity. Finally, if you have changed e-mails and would like to keep receiving our lovely e-mails please re-submit by using our sign-up form on the left column.

And if there’s anything that you would like to see more or less of in the monthly Retrospects now is your opportunity to let us know. Thanks.

Got it. The fit of the type was ghastly, plus it was smaller than I prefer to read and I couldn't change the font size. But strong branding, interesting content, and well written, so I read it anyway. Maybe not next time.

Nick, you can always click on the provided link below the title to see it on the web.

Hi, I just got the mass email and promptly removed myself from the mailing list [I prefer to just read the content on this site]. The Ask Jeeves portion of the message was a mystery to me. What does contemplating suicide or bouncing checks have to do with this site?

Sometime the links to specific topics in the body of the emails i get from su don't work. Is that me or you?

Also the business (freelance, startup design firm, getting/keeping clients) related topics are great. Keep it up.

Maya, Debbie's post started by asking those questions. So I thought it would be funny, in my own sick sense of what funny is, to Ask Jeeves.

> Is that me or you?

I'm not sure. I hope it's you ; ) Seriously though, some e-mail clients will just not react to the links which is why I provide a link (spelled out) to see the content on the web.

Armin,

Is that me or you

Gotcha. The non-active links are not a hindrance... I still know my way to this site, just curious. Thanks

True, but I expect things to be right first time, and I hate to admit I can't see things clearly. Plus I assume that something that looks so carefully crafted is supposed to look exactly the way it does, so i soldiered on, rather than click the link, which never occurred to me.

So, it would have worked better for me with just the logo, then my usual email type. See, if everbody who sends an email does it with different typography, checking your email would be like reading a book where the type changes all the time. Ugh.

Like I said, the topic was novel, interesting content, and well written, so you don't need the arch typography in my little Entourage window.

Now that I think about it, I rarely visit Speak Up since I got OS X, probably because I find the body type is too small/fuzzy.

command + will make the text larger in safari and ie mac. and firefox too, i think. speak up's design is relatively flexible and can accomodate at least one text size up without breaking.

Thank you Erica. What a relief this command + has been for my eyes on safari squinting against the glare . . .

: )

It's the web, nothing works the first time.

Wasn't that essentially marchFirst's business plan?

Yup, they then changed it to a more memorable and simple motto: nothing works.

Big recipient list?

Are you just doing a giant CC: or using Dreamhost's mailing/announcement list system?

"Are you just doing a giant CC"

If so, make sure it's a giant BCC instead...

Sorry to keep harping on this, but by the time I text-zoom Georgia up to a size where I don't feel like I constantly have to blink to remove the OS X layer of blur, there's not much text on the screen, and I'm doing too much scrolling.

(I really do prefer Verdana, which is less fuzzy for some reason.)

Armin, this was supposed to be the site of bitmappedness -- help!

Matt Waggner’s comment is:

Hey Nick -- maybe turning off "text smoothing" in the "Appearance" preferences would help you out? It lets you pick the size at which it starts anti-aliasing the text...

fonts on my screen both eMail and website seem to look just fine -- maybe time to get your eyes checked?

Nick, I feel you. Seriously. When I bought my laptop because my old iMac died I was forced, yes forced, to switch to OS X. After registering the computer the first thing I did was open Speak Up and I almost cried. It was all anti-aliased!!!! Georgia's beautiful crispness was gone. But alas, I am now used to it.

So, I'd suggest filing a claim with Jobs. I could render all the text in each post in Unibody!

nick shinn’s comment is:

At the top is with anti-aliasing off.

At the bottom is with it minimized. (I particularly object to the way the letters bleed into one another -- these is really dysfunctional when you consider the amount of hinting in this font.)

Neither is satisfactory.

I'm using a big old CRT monitor. Perhaps it would be better on a LCD?
