20 Billion Served… Almost

Congratulations to Mr. Tan Le for leaving the 20,000th comment on Speak Up. Tan, you win not much; a drink on me, perhaps, next time we meet. And many thanks to all of you who have contributed to such a lofty milestone — I know you could have been working instead.

Thank you all, this is pretty cool.

And thanks for building an amazing resource.

Sniff, thank you..sniff.

I'm so happy and honored to have wasted so much time here. I'd like to share this miniscule moment of joy with all of my compadres whom I've argued, bantered, overgeneralized, insulted, laughed with, and admired. You know who you are dammit.

And to Armin — a big Godfather man-kiss. I luv ya man.

Ok, back to work.

Congratulations to Mr. Tan Le for leaving the 20,000th

Of course it was Tan. Like the kid who sat in the front row and always raised his hand way too enthusiastically.

Congratulations Armin.

Woohoo! Congrats guys! This site is a wonderful resource... I've learned much while coming here. Grassy ass.

I've always been proud to have Speak Up displayed on my browser window, but now with that loud banner... I hide it.

I know it won't be up forever, and I understand why it's there, but still... I can't wait until it's gone.

You're just jealous Weinberger because you didn't make Mr.20K.

No man-kiss for you.

Tan’s comment is:

Ok, for using "Lee" on purpose, I will now have to kick your ass next time I come down to LA Peter.

I'll just ignore the other comment. I'm not anywhere fucking close to that many postings.

And get a freaking haircut you hippie.

Congratulations to all. Tan, you were the one chosen by our destiny to be Mr. 20k, and I will have a private conversation with armin about at least pitching in a burger or something to with the drink we promises.

Thank you all for your bantering, your on-course/off-course/heated/slamming the table/cooling off in the shower/pulling the joker out of the box participation.

This, my friends, is a great day.

Tan, first of all congrats on this great accomplishment, clearly a stellar point in your career. And to the man, Armin, who made it all happen, many thanks. Thanks for giving me a spot to spend countless work hours throwing out my virtual opinions, since no one where I work has yet to figure out that design matters.

Tan, you da man.

so what's the next milestone? 25K? 40K? or 50K? How do we keep track so we can get a beer, too?

20,011 ... 20,012 ...

On Jul.13.2004 at 06:11 PM
Tan’s comment is:

All joking aside, I'm not the one that should be congratulated. I just happened to be the 20K customer to walk through the checkstand w/ a pack of gum.

The congrats should all go to Armin and the site. Its continued success and growth means good things for all of us.

Probably 25K and then 50K… hopefully.

Yes, let's do some counting, shall we?

In October of 2003 we reached 10,000 comments. Back then I did a quick tally on who had left the most messages. And it looked something like this:

Me: 1827

Tan: 781

Darrel: 640

Debbie: 121

So let's see how we are faring 10,000 comments later in July of 2004:

Me: 2,914

Tan: 1,308

Darrel: 931

Marian: 529

Debbie: 241

ps: 173

I'd complain if I were you Tan. After all, the guy who bought the 100,000,000th song off iTMS got a powerbook and an iPod. What do you get? A beer and a manly hug.

Feh.

P.S. Congrats, Armin. I got my copy of Sheepy this morning too. We're all winners!

Remember I'm the mathematician in the family and that makes:

Dates Oct'03 Jul'04

Armin 18.3% 14.6%

Tan 7.8% 6.5%

Darrel 6.4% 4.6%

Marian ???? 2.7%

Debbie 1.2% 1.2%

Rest 66.3% 70.4%

So as you can see the usual commenters have decreased their participation (thank God?? just joking oc course) whereas other people have taken up a larger share of comments.

Congratulations on such a great crowd.

Maybe next milestone you can do something like Steve (Jobs) upon the buyer of the 100 million song!!

Now how 'bout a locations (by city) breakdown to show the extent of your readership.

Berlin?

Sydney?

Yeah, that's a bit harder of a request. I can tell you that 88% of the readers are from the US and Canada. The next bigger percentage is 6% from Europe. And within the US, 40% is from the East Coast while only 21% is from the West Coast — go figure.

> hey, i thought you're the one mixing pharmaceuticals in the basement

He is also a hobbyist designer!

Hmm, 20k, well as the PREVIOUS manager of the post driven, talented Mr.Leah, one relief is that I am no longer wondering why he is typing more than using his mouse(now I know!). Now it's Landor's puzzle to solve... Congrats Tan, your comments stir passion, interest, frustration and wonder, good work.

Ahem, look who's talking Greg. Addicting, isn't it?

The trick is to ration your consumption of SU. "I'll visit SU when I've finished this task." And hop on for 15 minutes, stop, get back to working, and then visit again in another hour.

Course, it also helps to have your own office :-)
