Poster Contest Deadline Extended

The deadline for our Speak Up poster contest will be extended to Monday, September 20 at 11:59 pm Central Standard Time. This gives you another two weekends to work on your poster. And we all want to see some really awesome work, OK?

And, as encouragement, there are a few more posters to peruse in the Viewing Den.

Oh my god that "hobo" quote is the funniest damn thing I've read in a long time... the poster actually made me crack up.

Dan C’s comment is:

These are fantastic! Kudos to the designers; I can't wait to hang any one of them in my dorm!

psst, Armin... The second page in the Viewing Den is masquerading as "page 1 of 2." I got all excited about getting to see yet another page of posters, only to ... not. :(

Darn, thanks Dan.

Brady’s comment is:

I've noticed some of the posters do not mention the author of the quote.

This makes me cock an eyebrow and say, "HMMMM."

On Sep.02.2004 at 02:05 PM
Armin’s comment is:

Uncock that eyebrow Brady. I know this is isn't mentioned anywhere but each poster in the credit and information area will list the designer's name as well as the quotee's.

So enough with the complainin' and do a poster.

Oh…

; )

Hmm...an extension. I have some major seat time on a plane comin up, and this is just the perfect thing to work on. Course, I've committed on stuff before, and well...let's just leave it at that.

Armin:

Glad you extended the Date.

It'll give the OLD MAN

Much needed time to Cook.

Since, you're being so Generous.

You should allow each Designer to create one extra Poster. Four in all. I have some Ideas.

Difficult to limit my Dillusions of Granduer to just three.

Do the Old Man a Favor!!!!!!

TAN:

If you think, I'm not going to ask permission to

use.

...SUCK MY STAEDLER.

You're Sadly Mistaken.

By the way, TAN, KUDOS to Walter Landor finally receiving his Posthumos AIGA Lifetime Achievement Award 2004.

Long Overdue!!!!!!

For anyone interested, Step Inside Design pg. 66.

September-October, 2004

AIGA, Selects twenty (20) Designers to receive Lifetime Achievement Medals for 2004

Michael B. I know I get a personal invitation when you receive your Lifetime Achievement.

Armin:

Sorry for the second post. Needed to say this.

I did see the first batch of Design(s) for the poster contest. All were

interesting.

Refusing to look at the 2nd Batch of posters.

It's easy to get influenced by what someone else has already created. Thus, I think you should hold off on showing the work. Until the end of competition.

I'm already using a metaphor someone else incorporated in their Design. Whom displayed their work before mine.

Easy for someone to say. I ripped off their idea.

Both Original Ideas to solve a problem. I'm just holding mine until the eleventh hour.

Hate to be the Spoiler. You should reconsider showing so much of the work.

Original Ideas get diluted, if to much of the work is being displayed.

Aware you're proud of your Competition. You should be.

Just an observation.

Greg’s comment is:

Yeah, I kinda agree with D-Mave. I'm torn though; it's great to see the cool ass posters, but I'd hate to see my idea already up there (though that's doubtful).

Armin’s comment is:

Maven, I hear your concern. It can go either way to be honest. There are equal pros and cons in showing and not showing. Since the decision to show has been taken and we are almost near the end, we will continue to put them up.

Ultimately the judges will decide if somebody ripped off someone and if so, which one is the best solution.

Holding off until the 11th hour is a viable option for those who would rather do that. It will not be frowned upon. This is a game and everybody is free to play it their way.

You should allow each Designer to create one extra Poster. Four in all. I have some Ideas.

Difficult to limit my Dillusions of Granduer to just three.

Sorry, 3 is the limit. Self-editing plays an important role in the process of design, so we want to encourage that.

Aaron’s comment is:

holy shit.

That power line poster kicks soooo much ass. Personally, I'd say that seeing these makes me more motivated to want to design one myself...if I have the time.

We're in it with you Steve, hang on tight. And watch out Armin/Tan, I've got a quote request heading your way.

...SUCK MY STAEDLER.

How come Tan never says stuff like this anymore?

On Sep.03.2004 at 11:02 AM
Tan’s comment is:

Actually, I told you-know-who to "Suck my Schaedler" as in my 18" Schaedler pica ruler. Though Staedler (drafting supplies) would work too, I suppose. It's just that the 18" ruler carries more symbolism when used in this context, if you know what I mean.

Maven, feel free to use it. And marian darlin, I never knew you liked it when I talk all nasty and stuff ;)

...is there a thread on artist/designer verbal warfare somewhere? little slings like Tan's and the Type Geek Wars? In one of my art classes we used to go through dick blick catalogues and make up new 'curses' for fun. It got to the point where we couldn't open one without laughing...

TAN:

I'm emailing you this weekend for the confirmation email.(Thanks)

I told Armin, I will not use

YOU KNOW WHO'S name in the quote.

He's my Dear, Dear Compadre. We don't want any Hurt Feelings.

Just clean Honest Fun.

I purposely used Staedler. As I didn't want anyone using the same Quote.

It's Okay.

Initially, I was going to change Schaedler to Staedler.

Referencing Staedler Mars. Felt Markers and Pens.

TAN, next to Mark Kingsley's Quote.

Your's is Definitely the Funniest and most Outrageous Moment in Speak Up History.

Only on Speak Up.

And, Only you can get away with that.

I'm dying laughing.

Agrayspace’s comment is:

I have a question that I'll post here cause I believe other people might be interested in the answer.

Is there no means to create a horizontal poster? The template is a verticle proportion and the way the guides are set up, it looks like it wouldn't work to just rotate it. Can we get a horizontal template?

Or do we fear the horizontal format and then evil it causes in society? :)

On Sep.06.2004 at 01:59 PM
Armin’s comment is:

Grayish,

That is a good question. Unfortunately, nope, no horizontal template is available. Vertical it is.
