Start Spreading the News…

As of September 15 (through the late 20s) Speak Up and UnderConsideration will no longer call Chicago its headquarters. In a bold, daring and long-time in the making move we (and the cats) are relocating said headquarters to New York — Brooklyn, to be more precise. After three-plus years in the Windy City we are taking this online, self-proclaimed emporium to the heart of it all with hopes of boundless growth.

As such, this month will be slightly busy for us — as has been the last two to three weeks — so please excuse any oversights, delays in response and lack of participation online. We are still here, checking e-mail unfetteredly and we’ll hopefully be fully functional by Octoberish in our new Eastern time zone.

Since we are here, I’d like to address, quickly, that all your wonderful suggestions for ideas are not being ignored, we have them filed and we will address them eventually — don’t be discouraged if you don’t see your ideas online or if we don’t respond. Keep them coming, they really help round out our content.

Everything will remain as is, other than Speak Up’s mailing address. We have enjoyed our stay in Chicago but it’s time to move forward, grow, explore and pay more money for less of everything. If you happen to be in the New York Metropolitan area we’ll surely bump into each other(s) in one way or another — and stay tuned for a city-warming party sometime in the Fall.

So, with no much further ado, thank you Chicago… we love you!

Armin’s comment is:

This probably shouldn't be said aloud, but I'm not a baseball fan… I'd be more of a Knick. But they kinda suck.

> (Good luck with the move!)

Thanks Darrel. One of our cats seems to be enjoying it… (appropriately putting his butt on David Carson's End of Print)

We're going to have to work on that baseball thing. And it's always about the Bronx, Jason.

What part of Brooklyn? The ever-trendy Williamsburg?

Armin’s comment is:

Ew. No! The family-friendly South Slope, near Prospect Park.

On Sep.08.2004 at 10:31 AM
Jason T’s comment is:

Prospect Park! That's where my ma was raised. It's an up and coming place now, compare to the 50-60s.

Knicks... cheers to that, Armin. Yes, they kinda suck, but things are a changin'. Who knows, maybe when the Nets become the Brooklyn Nets, their tide will rise.

Rob ’s comment is:

Even down here in Baltimore, I know the only real baseball played in New York is on the Grand Concourse. Or you can just take the #4. In any case, a happy welcome to the East Coast and best of luck with the move. We'll just have to work on Armin a little bit to get him to love the game the way it was meant to be.

And by the way, you do have a very smart cat.

David V.’s comment is:

Ah, Chicago to Brooklyn, I made that move a few years ago. It was a little tough to pay twice as much for a 1/4 of the space we had in Chicago, not to mention giving up the garden, parking and 12 foot high ceilings we had in Logan Square for 600/month. But once you get over the horrifying real estate situation its well worth it. Congrats!

To Armin&Bryony:

Good luck and much happiness on your move to NY.

Out of curiousity, what reasons did you two decide

to move?

Was it a new job, the design culture, for the

heck of it?

Good luck on the move! If you get sick of the city and need a break JetBlue is 100 bucks to Burlington VT. We have a spare room and plenty of couches.

Armin’s comment is:

Frank, moving to NY is something we have always wanted to do. Perhaps we didn't acknowledge it all along but for the past two years we've really come to the conclusion that that's where we want to be. The reasons? Simple: it's New York. It's all of it, the design scence, friends, the environment, the expensive rents, the crowded trains and streets, the smell of garbage on most streets, the lawsuit-waiting-to-happen doors that lead to restaurants' basements, the history… all of it.

Wow. Congrats. Yay.

Maybe now I WILL bump into you. Well, maybe a planned bump after a 1.5 hour train ride. :)

So welcome. And any time you would like a quick getaway - - let me know. Like I said, New Paltz is a hop, skip and a jump!

Um… sure. ; )

> Where are you and Byrony employed?

I will be employed in a design firm but I'd rather wait until I start and have been there for a few days before saying where. Not that it's a huge secret nor a big deal, but just out of consideration for them. And really, it's nothing weird ot anything. Bryony will try her hand at freelance probably. And the cats will be cute.

If I could enter the poster contest I would use that quote.

Chicago will miss you. I'm beginning to think that no one stays in Chicago; everyone I know evaporates eventually... and normally distills in NYC.

Have fun, and best fortune. Park Slope is great! And you'll be blocks from the McSweeney's store.

I'm in Brooklyn as well - in an area called Windsor Terrace (between Prospect Park and Greenwood Cemetary, mentioned above). I think we should all get together for a Speak-Up: Welcome to Brooklyn Party! I wouldn't mind meeting some other designers.

The train ride really is not that bad.

Welcome to the neighborhood Armin, Bryony (and Speak Up!)

As to the Yankees v Mets question... everyone knows that being a Yankee fan is too easy. The true masochists stick with the Mets -- 11 game losing streaks and all.

Speak Up spreads.

I was at a club in Seattle last night to hear a local band play. The lead singer of the band (who I know is not a designer or anything related) was wearing a Speak Up t-shirt.

It’s one thing to be recognized by your peers, but it’s a whole new level when you reach real people.

Nice work.
