American Photo remembers some underrated photographers of the 1970s and 80s, including Bill King, the ever strange Les Krims and James Baes — responsible for the Black Crowes album cover above, which was originally seen on the July 1976 edition of Hustler magazine.

Iceland must be a nation of dreamers. One night in September, they turned out all the lights in Reykjavik so everyone could gaze at the night sky. Unfortunately, it was cloudy that night.

CJ: Can you talk about how the tentacle came to be used in your work?

TM: At that time (pre-Urotsuki Doji), it was illegal to create a sensual scene in bed. I thought I should do something to avoid drawing such a normal sensual scene. So I just created a creature. (His tentacle) is not a (penis) as a pretext. I could say, as an excuse, this is not a (penis), this is just a part of the creature. You know, the creatures, they don’t have a gender. A creature is a creature. So it is not obscene — not illegal.

Drawing intercourse was, and is, illegal in Japan. That is our big headache: to create such a sensual scene. We are always using any type of trick.

It’s a paradoxical wish, but one that captures the peculiar anxieties of the postmodern era in their most acute post-9/11 form. In the end, the iPod is the ideal product for the era of homeland insecurity. You can’t take it all with you, but at least you can take your music. It may not be possible to return home to retrieve the rest of your belongings. But at least you will have something of yourself to bring along for the trip. And, if you turn the volume up loud enough, it will even drown out the sirens. [via]

“This is quite simply an atrocious situation not just for scholars but for all US citizens whose freedom of thought requires access to their own history. … Misguided greed and poorly interpreted copyright law are the only things standing in the way of a people’s history of television.”

Dressing Room One. Iggy Pop: “You know what would be really nice? If you could make this room look less like a typical rock & roll dressing room and more sort of… Interesting? are you with me? Just let someone loose with a little bit of artistic flair… Er, do you know any homosexuals? And am I allowed to say that? Probably not.” — Design (and designer) specifications in Iggy Pop’s concert rider.

Joe, it's been corrected now, the URL didn't have the www and that may have had something to do with it. Give it a try.
