ABOUT WORD IT (THE AS-IT-HAPPENED DESCRIPTION)
---
Word It was originally a feature of the blog Speak Up, actively running since April of 2003 and in March of 2009 if was spun off into its very own blog that you are visiting at the moment. The premise of Word It is deceptively simple and, ideally, creatively addictive.

Every month we come up with a word. The criteria for word selection is somewhat random: We may try to relate it to the month, or we may tie it with world events, or we might just have heard someone utter a word and thought it would be interesting. Luckily, there is never a shortage of options. With a word selected, we typically introduce it five or seven days before the new month arrives so that you can get a head start.

Once the word has been revealed anyone can submit their visual interpretation of that word. There are absolutely no limitations as to what you can do, the idea is that you define your own challenge and set your own expectations. As Word Its come in, they are uploaded for all to enjoy — and in this new blog, for all to comment. We rarely censor Word Its, only if we deem them offensive or hurtful or there is copyright infringement, but for the most part we post everything.

Word It has proven itself over the years as a nice respite from client work and a space for visual tomfoolery as well as for testing out ideas and allowing your gut to react to the simplest of cues: Words.

Because we are eager to please, every month we select three winners randomly and send them a free copy of The Word It Book, a selection of the best Word Its from the first 30 months, published in 2007.

The Logo
It’s hard to go wrong with House Industries’ Neutraface No.2, so that’s what we went with. Selected the Titling weight and set it with some cozily tight letterspacing.

Fonts
As a complement to Neutraface No. 2 we employed Girard Slab for the details, pretty amazing how well it looks at small sizes.
