WHY INTERN AT UCLLC?
We are a small — just two of us (Bryony and Armin, hi!) — hybrid of a design firm, a publisher, an online empire, and an industry organization. Despite being small, we are very intense and very prolific. Our projects are widely visited, read, bought, attended, and otherwise appreciated by the design community. You get a chance to experience an alternative to the typical design firm scenario and see what it takes to get ideas executed and projects finished even when there is no client on the other end as most of our projects are self-initiated. You’ll get an unfiltered look at what it takes to run a small business. We also know a lot of people in the industry and are not afraid to make introductions or have them sit with you and look at your portfolio if you turn out to be a terrific employee. We are design nerds. (That’s a good thing, we think). And we are very nice.
SKILLS NEEDED / QUALIFICATIONS / ATTITUDE
We are looking for someone with a deep attraction to graphic design who is interested in seeing how a small business operates (or how you can do away with clients) and is ready to help out with whatever task may be handed. Heck, you don’t even need to be a student or recent grad… you can be a seasoned freelancer looking for something else to do in the afternoons. Although we are not looking for the awesomest designer ever, we definitely need someone with a good eye for design so Comic Sans, Trajan, and Papyrus users need not apply.
Some actual bullet points:
• Age or Experience: Don’t matter.
• Software: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat
• HTML: Very basic understanding (how to do bolds, italics, links, etc.)
• Optional vis a vis the above: good understanding of HTML and CSS a plus
RESPONSIBILITIES
Our most pressing need is finding someone that can assist us consistently with some of our daily tasks like resizing and optimizing images for our blogs; preparing postage and packages of our book, Flaunt; or sorting name badges in alphabetic order for our Brand New Conference. Other crazy things might come up, but you get the idea.
We would love to have someone that is interested in writing and editing so that, time permitting, you can throw in some cool links for Quipsologies or write a critique for Brand New or FPO.
One important distinction we need to make is that, in contrast to other internships, there isn’t much designing to do. Weeks might pass without even us designing anything. So don’t expect to do a lot of sketches or explorations. If an outside client comes while you are here, groovy, you might get some of that action, but we don’t actively look for work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This is not your typical design firm internship: We do not have a dozen clients that keep us busy with tons of design projects in a fancy downtown office with a big conference room. We are our own client and self-generate three or five big projects a year, we publish daily to our blogs, and we do it all in our own house.
We have an office space, but it’s not isolated from the rest of the house — an important thing to point out as our two daughters (currently 10 months old and 3.75 years old) hang out most of the afternoons here, so you will have to battle it out for potty usage. Kidding… it’s no battle, you always lose. You will come in through the front door and sidestep toys, tiny socks, and the occasional rogue Cheerio that refuses to vacuum. You might see baskets of unfolded laundry and dirty dishes in the sink.
You would think we are trying to scare every applicant away, but we are not. We just want to establish expectations. The flip side is that you get to work in a very laid back atmosphere, you can raid our fridge, and you get to go home early every single day — we will literally kick you out the door at 5:30 pm unless you want to cook dinner, bathe kids and put them to bed.
