Welcome to Word It

Many moons ago, circa April of 2003, we unveiled the very first batch of Word Its around the theme of Inspiration, followed by Window. These were loosely updated and maintained without a specific time frame. In October of that same year we instituted the monthly schedule and over the last 66 months (and words) we have uploaded over 4,400 Word Its by more than 1,250 people. (They have all been imported here, by the way). And in that time we have published a book and displayed a selection of Word Its at the Cooper-Hewitt’s National Design Triennial (here is a happy customer). All thanks to our amazing contributors. Realizing the potential of Word It as an ever-growing source of original design and imagery as well as a continued metaphorical gym for the creative mind we have decided to spin off Word It into its own blog where the entries can shine and be the center of attention. Here are some of the things to look for in this new era for Word It.

The Word It Book Monthly Giveaway
We will start with some cool news to get you excited. Every month, for the next 12 months, we will give away three Word It books each month at random. When the month ends, and all the Word Its have been posted we will have a video raffle where we will post an unedited video pulling out three numbers. Based on the order in which Word Its were posted from the beginning of the month to the end, the selected numbers will receive the free book. More details on this when we announce the first giveaway at the end of this month. So always be sure to provide a valid e-mail address.

Submission Form
VERY IMPORTANT: All Word It submissions must now be made through our online submission form. Word Its submitted directly by e-mail will not be considered. We will have a grace period while everyone adjusts, but around April we will stop looking at incoming Word Its by e-mail.

Submission Guidelines
The guidelines remain mostly the same. The biggest change is that you can send your Word Its in RGB color mode. Give them a read anyway, to make sure you are not missing anything.

Schedule
Word Its will be posted as they are received. Posting is done by humans so uploading might take anywhere from three minutes to three days.

Comments
We'll be keeping an eye out to see how the commenting takes shape, hopefully it allows for some good-natured conversation.

RSS
You can, of course, stay on top of all submissions by subscribing to our RSS feed.

Tags, Tags, Tags!
One of the features that most excited us about doing Word It as its own blog was the ability to create tags for all submissions, providing a new and eclectic perspective of browsing the vast Word It archive. So far we have generated close to 2,500 tags for the existing Word Its and will be tagging all new submissions as they come in. Your help in suggesting tags when you submit is greatly appreciated. You can see all tags here as a ginourmous cloud or just to get you started you could see Word Its that are blue, Word Its that feature George W. Bush, Word Its that use speech bubbles, Word Its related to Paul Rand, Word Its created by Pesky Illustrator, or Word Its that have dogs in them.

Bugs, Errors, Faux Pas
If you see anything wrong as you navigate the site, please let us know in the comments.

Designers, illustrators, writers, enthusiasts… whichever your profession or creative inclination may be, we are continually thrilled to see all the alternatives that you come up with, and with this new focused blog we hope to see more and more and more Word Its.

All the best,

Bryony and Armin
