About

(Est. 2013) “Daily Overview was inspired, and derives its name, from an idea known as the Overview Effect. This term refers to the sensation astronauts have when given the opportunity to look down and view the Earth as a whole. They have the chance to appreciate our home in its entirety, to reflect on its beauty and its fragility all at once. That’s the cognitive shift that we hope to inspire. […] As a result, the Overviews (what we call these images) focus on the places and moments where human activity — for better or for worse — has shaped the landscape. Each Overview starts with a thought experiment. We consider the places where man has left his mark on the planet and then conduct the necessary research to identify locations (and the corresponding geo-coordinates) to convey that idea.”

Relevant quote
The idea behind Daily Overview is striking in both its beauty and its simplicity, so it made sense for the mark to share those traits. By taking the D and the O from their name, we crafted a mark that depicts their method of curation — a satellite, pointing earthward — as well as the core sentiment of the project: see, think, and understand.

Opinion

This probably breaks my own rule of larger, mainstream clients being that this is an Instagram account (and web publication) — fairly small. But since I'm a big fan and one of the nearly 31,000 Instagram followers of Daily Overview I really enjoyed this change. The point of DO is to look at the Earth from above so a giant "O" standing in for Earth with an orbiting "D" makes sense and is playful. The bonus applications like the business cards with the full-bleed photos and coordinates are a nice touch. If you don't follow @dailyoverview yet, now is a good time.
