Brand Design Director

Wieden+Kennedy

Portland, OR

Sue Murphy is a design director at Wieden+Kennedy Portland. In this role, Sue oversees brand work from concept through completion across the areas of design, writing, creative technology, and strategy across brands such as Airbnb, Samsung and Coca-Cola.

Sue grew up on a small island at the bottom of Ireland. Her dad said she came free in a box of cornflakes, so her origins may trace back to China. She began her career at age 11 coding websites and, prior to joining W+K, worked at agencies such as Ogilvy & Mather and Wolff Olins, creating work that set industry standards for brands like Facebook, Google, and IBM in cities such as Amsterdam and San Francisco.

She has a first-class honors BA degree in visual communications, received a scholarship to study for her masters in advertising, and holds several media diplomas from spending her childhood summers indoors.

Sue has won various awards such as D&AD Pencils and One Show awards, was runner-up on AIGA’s Command X: Season 3 design reality show, and was named one of PRINT Magazine’s 15 artists under 30. Her work has been featured in various publications, including Fast Company and Rolling Stone.

She is a passionate advocate for creativity—nurturing culture within agencies and out, mentoring students, giving talks, and judging award shows.
