This is the second project developed by Another New Calligraphy which we are covering this week: ANC001. Their very first title by the band A Light Sleeper. With several mentions of water in the lyrics, the music struck a cord with Bill and Robyn as they stood atop a lighthouse overlooking Lake Superior during their honeymoon.

The artwork was primarily created in India ink with a plastic knife, which I then manipulated and layered in Illustrator. Having finalized the design with the band, it came time to figure out how exactly to print the packaging. I had just bought a new large-format inkjet printer, and as ANC is a nonprofit venture funded by my sporadic freelance work, it was simply not cost-effective to use high-end paper. Besides, in keeping with my general DIY spirit, it just seemed fishy to not try something different. After an incredible array of products failed my standards or just simply did not work, I finally settled on a low-cost recycled drawing paper that holds the ink beautifully and feels great in your hands.

Now, we just need to have them reveal what this “magic” paper is called so that others can enjoy its virtues.
