As much as I would want to design a promotional piece for a paper company, I think I would be so overwhelmed with the possibilities — multiple papers! multiple production techniques! free theme! — that I would probably just print on one stock, offset black ink, and I would just do 28 pages, with A – Z set in Gotham. Luckily, there are other venturesome designers out there who can wave, literally and metaphorically, different kinds of paper, printing and storytelling to make designers want to use a specific kind of paper for their next project.

In this handsome volume by, um, Volume Inc., the designers “gave a sequence of ten images to three different writers and asked each of them to build a story.” The result is three great narratives that handily help display the same image in different kinds of papers. Throughout the book, hits of overprinted metallic inks add a hefty typographic punch — and show that metallics can look hot on uncoated paper and even on felt.
