Personal promotional pieces are more often than not subjected to a torturous quality control process that leaves little room for the unexpected or for introducing new ideas. Shaw Nielsen realized that an open mind is often rewarded.

The poster was started as a personal project. As a professional illustrator it’s always good to break out of your normal subject matter and explore different corners of the world in your style. As far as the production goes, I had originally wanted to silkscreen the poster at a much larger size but decided to letterpress it after having a conversation with Jason, at Genghis Kern, who has a passion for his craft and really helped to make this poster special. We ended up making the poster a smaller size because of the limitations of his poster press, but it ended up changing the piece in ways I couldn’t have seen, for instance Jason ended up really upping the pressure so the impression of the plates made the finished poster really textural.

Long live the tactile, and long live intricate and beautiful illustrations. When they come together… beauty is born.
