Short of putting on a deep-diving suit and carrying down with us a truckload of loose PMS chips to clog that oil hole in the gulf, one of the best things designers can do is whip up a cool-looking poster, print it nicely, and get his or her dorky design friends to pony up some money so that that money can be put to good use by an organization that can help on the ground. Fellow Austinite Joshua Kramer hopes to get your money — 100% of the proceeds go to the Gulf Oil Spill Restoration Fund that was put together by the National Wildlife Federation — with a cute crab holding on for dear life to a lifesaver. Also, that, my friends, is a four-color silkscreen poster featuring transparent brown to dramatize the effect of oil on water and as Joshua points out, that’s no easy feat.

The biggest lesson learned, trying to make brown ink transparent is extremely difficult. It takes an awful lot of extender to get the brown to the right transparency and in turn, this causes the “kiss” to be your worst enemy while pulling the screens.
