I could not have thought of a better visual metaphor myself than a pair of woman legs stitched to a flaming fish to promote he Art Institute of York, Pennsylvania’s Annual Alumni Exhibit. Of course I didn’t. Greg Bennett did. And he does that kind of thing often for his posters that are not just greatly designed but always greatly produced.

This poster was produced with a finishing process called foil stamping as opposed to traditional offset, digital or screen printing. Foil stamping is a process which transfers colored foil from a sculpted metal plate onto another surface such as paper. Foil stamping is much like any other form of non-traditional finishing, when it’s done right it adds a commemorative value to a well-designed piece because of the craft behind the process. Greg selected two contrasting foils, one matte/dull and one shiny/reflective to fully enhance the foil effect. The paper specified was Malmero Perlé, Noir which is very interesting because it has tiny metallic flecks embedded in the paper fibers.

I had the pleasure of photographing this piece and I can attest to the coolness of the tiny metallic flecks and how great the contrast between the glossy and matte foil stamp is, almost like mixing silkscreen with foil stamp.
