For the fourth Edition of the OCAD Student Press’ Shift series of student essays titled Shift Directions Liam Johnstone designed a double-sided that accommodates five written essays and five graphic essays. He explains:

The book is double-sided, with the written essays reading in one direction and the graphic essays reading in the other direction. The title, which is identical on the front and back cover, is a holographic foil stamp that changes colours as you tilt the book. The folios, authors names and essay titles all run vertically which allows the reader to navigate the book no matter which orientation they are holding the book.

The biggest challenge was budget. This was the first edition of Shift in full colour and we didn’t have a lot to work with. With the help of Sherry Ripa from Lithosource we were able to not only stay within our small budget but also get a sweet holographic foil stamp on the cover!

The other challenge was pagination. I had to work very closely with the printer in order to make sure everything was in order. I sent very detailed mock-ups and instructions and communicated frequently with the printer.

Some people might ask for more cowbell, all I ask for is more holographic foil on bright blue ink.
