As well as the self-portrait aspect, this project, in my opinion, acknowledges issues of hierarchy in printed ephemera. The business card, as van Haaften states below, is a tool for visual communication. But it’s also a manifestation of oneself. The concept of “overriding” somebody’s old business card in order to promotes oneself seems pretty proficient, and the decision to laser cut them was cardinal to their success. Essentially, the new identity is literally and physically destroying the old. Kinda violent, but I like it.

Business cards are part of a visual communication, usually custom-made designed for someone’s professional identity.

Over the years hundreds of these cards were given to me on several occasions (business, travels, openings, etc.). These cards represent my traces in different worlds. It’s a personal and unique collection and therefore a kind of self-portrait.
By applying my personal data on these cards, I create my own new business card, loaded with a valuable relation. Each of my cards has a story.
