I’m always interested to learn about new ways to manipulate ink on paper. I believe much of the world views printing as a rigid process, but it’s actually quite fluid. There are many ins-and-outs to be discovered or delightfully stumbled upon. Print can have sensual dimensionality, or create dialogues between printer and the public. Jon has done both here.

This project was an attempt to bring tactile design and design for the visually impaired into the public consciousness as well as furthering my personal explorations into this kind of printing method. Typography, as much as we all love it, is inaccessible to blind and visually impaired people. I have been experimenting with tactile graphics that can make things easier to understand without actually having to see or read. The illustration in question, named the ‘Quick Blind Fox’, can be ‘seen’ by feeling the raised black areas. The image is hand drawn originally and I concentrated on the fur only so that the body movement of the fox could be fully engaged with and understood.

The method of creating the raised image involves printing the document using an ink-jet printer onto ‘swell paper’ and then heating it. The heat makes the areas of the paper with coated with black ink rise up and become touchable. All printing and fusing was dome by Zychem Ltd.

Printing this way is always a challenge and the outcomes are fairly unpredictable. I printed the image in a few different sizes, the larger of which worked best. Thinner lines become less raised that thicker ones, and the lines of the smaller prints did not rise as much as I’d have hoped. Another thing to bear in mind is that only black ink will rise and become tactile. Colour will remain flat.
