I’ve got many friends who are musicians, (it’s kind of unavoidable living in Austin) and I know for a fact that making a record is one of the hardest things to do. There are several things to take care of; recording, mixing, promoting, packaging. Chris’ presentation is very personal—it looks like an assemblage of items he pulled from his own chest of drawers. I’m especially impressed with the gold embossed script for Matt Ellis’ “Births, Deaths & Marriages” limited edition CD packaging.

I wanted the packaging to match the weight of the title of the album and to offer something special to the listener. The idea was to create a keepsake box, full of items from a person’s life that marked important occasions and were worth keeping. The trick was doing all that on an indy budget. With a lot of patience and the help from some close friends, I was able to continue with my DIY theme of the recording and ended up with something I think people will enjoy and really like to hang onto.

The biggest hurdle in creating these packs was how to get gold embossed type on the right sized boxes affordably and looking great! Check out the “making of” video below.
