Project Description

Arizona State University's Graphic Design Student Association (GDSA) takes about 40 students on a yearly trip to a major city to tour numerous design firms and explore somewhere they otherwise might not have a reason to travel to.

In years past, the annually elected GDSA Council have distributed 8.5-by-11-inch packets via email in PDF form, requiring students to print it and fold it up if they wanted to keep it on them. We wanted to go in a more personal direction, giving them a notebook with all of the information for our scheduled activities as well as providing them a place to jot down notes and ideas. Drawing inspiration from the Field Notes brand notebooks, we produced these notebooks with the intention of giving our attendees something that has personal value. This makes it a higher priority to keep track of its location, as well as leaving the students with a sentimental journal from their week-long adventure in New York City.

Production Lesson(s)

The main lesson learned with this project was to keep the printed content brief. The original written copy was edited way down prior to typesetting in order to maintain the 'journal' feel. Plus, it's not meant to be a novel, moreso a quick-look guide when students need to fill themselves in on the daily activities.”
